Dame bathrobe Like terrycloth robe. Yeah Well, you know, I'm in the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Notre Dame and I'm here this week speaking to teenagers. They have a youth program called Notre Dame Vision that they asked me to come speak at, so I'm kind of psyched about that. They put me up in the luxurious Morris Inn If you're not, it's the, it's the little hotel right on campus and they told me that I could charge things to my room, and hanging in my closet was this beautiful Notre Dame terry robe and it says you know, I can use it while I'm here and if I take it with me, they'll only charge the room 175 bucks, that's a good price for a bathrobe.

They won't even know, you know, I don't think I mean just the advertising alone they're getting from this. I mean, think of all the students that are going to go to Notre Dame now because of I mean they're going to get the day that hope bump.

And we're generous, we're not selfish, we've got the university in here at Franciscan as well. I don of bathrobes. I'll look into it. Okay, we we need to do that we absolutely need to do that.

You know, I was talking to somebody who works here and, uh, and I asked, I said I said so do you do your kids get free tuition if they go to Notre Dame? Cause, that's a, that's a policy in many universities if you work for them. And he looked at me and he said well, the challenge is getting your kids into Notre Dame. Apparently, they only accept 11% of the applicants. That's insane. It's crazy.

It's crazy, yeah, and I don't think they do get in. If the kids get in, they get a discount, but I don't think it's like we do.

Well, I think what they worked out is you get like half off, but they have a really good policy where if your kids get to another school they'll pay half of that. So they kind of found a way to say OK, we realize that the majority of our students and faculty and staff won't actually make it into the school, so we'll help your kids go to other schools, so they're trying to find a way to be generous which sounds pretty generous.

We'll miss you at the priest deacon seminarians conference. Yeah.

Well, and those that are listening, they're used to going to that conference. Part of this was also, um, we've got some different folks in to help with the priest, deacon, seminarians and I was, and they were going to bring in their own musicians. So it was like, oh, I guess I have the week off and this opportunity came up, and anytime I have the chance to speak to young people, I'm usually jumping at it, so I do. It is weird to not be on campus during that conference and there's a lot of friends I'd like to connect with. But uh, you know, preaching Jesus to young people is at the heart of what God calls me to do. So I mean, that's also why, last year, when, you know, I was invited to be at the Eucharistic Congress and it was like or you could do a youth conference.

I'm like yeah, I'm going to do a youth conference. No, it'll be good. We start this afternoon. It should be about 150 priests with us. Priest-deacon seminarians Fr John.

Ricardo is going to be joining us, so look forward to it, and they're doing his whole rescue project thing right. That's kind of like a Catholic alpha or parish mission, vibe Right.

It's really a pretty good critique of the culture, how we engage the culture and, ultimately, how the gospel is ultimately the answer to the ills that we're faced with right now.

So yeah, yeah, okay we have to mention sports, even though there's not a lot going on. We had the power and purpose conference this weekend. It was so sweet. I'm going up the stairway and this lady I hear this lady yell at me father, father, start turning around and she goes. I'm one of the women who loves the sports. It gives me something, so it's, she goes. It gives me something to talk about to my kids. She goes. I'm not joking, she goes. I really appreciate that you guys do this so for both of you that appreciate that we'll keep it coming.

Well, we had two major sports things happen this last week. Oh, three, yes, we'll start low and end high. So, stanley Cups three, let's not. Yes, let's start. Well, we'll start low and end high. So, um, stanley cups. The stanley cup winner was the florida panthers. They beat the edmonton oilers in game six. Canada goes once again without a stanley cup I think it's been about 38 years and florida, the state of florida, gets another stanley cup. Uh, you know the tampa bay Lightning. For the past few years, I think, they went to four straight Stanley Cup finals. They won two of them, and now the Florida Panthers have been in the past three of them and they've won the past two. So really, if you want to play hockey, the state of Florida is where Lord Stanley's Cup can often be found in this past decade and congratulations to the Florida Pulsars.

You won it. Oklahoma City, that was your team. So Oklahoma beat Indiana in seven. Scrappy team Indiana. But too much for the Thunder, the Thunder were too much for them. So NBA is over, nhl is over.

It's worth saying something, though it was, you know, at the half the Pacers were up by one.

Tyrese Halliburton went down with an Achilles strain. He'd been playing injured the whole time. It's that seemed to be the death knell for the Pacers. Congratulations to the Indiana Pacers.

You fought hard you made game sevens are very rare in NBA finals and uh, but yeah, okc was the better team throughout, and so tip of the hat to OKC. And and, by the way, canada, if your best hockey player can't win in the Stanley Cup, which is Connor McDavid, at least your best basketball player, sga Gilgis Alexander, who is the MVP and also a Canadian. So at least the Canadians made it in a very different sport, but they're on top of the world. Of course, the big sports news, and I noticed this yesterday. I was at a Red Robin, which is where I always try to go whenever I travel, and I was looking at TV because I was hoping they'd have the finals game on. They did not, but they had instead the PFC championship bout. What is PFC you?

I didn't ask yeah it, it is two very muscular guys in a boxing ring hitting each other with, of course, pillows what I found very interesting was not only their fighting.

I didn't see that happen. You know the sound wasn't on either, so I really missed a lot of nuance to the sport that I'm sure is there. I imagine the pillows are perfectly weighted. I'm sure there's rules about them. I thought it was funny they were also sponsored.

Yeah, so we are now officially because, you know, nba is over, nhl is over, there's only meaningless baseball, which for me is a redundant term. We're seeing a lot of very weird sports pillow fighting champions, cornhole tournaments. One of my favorites, uh, the papa shot tournament, is on. Uh, espn the oat show, um. So this is kind of the dry, weary months of summer where most of most of the talk is about trades and other things that are happening in the fall. We're all just waiting for football to begin.

Basically, yeah, we are approaching the time when there's one, two days where there's no sports at all, no major league sports. We're approaching that, so we'll keep people posted.

And the quarterback. Just to keep people updated, the quarterback, sanders, who Cleveland drafted, has received two speeding tickets in like a week. One was for 98 and one was for 111. So he just needs to slow down just a bit as he's going to practice it just a little bit.

All right, where's the? I got to open up my computer to do the great, exciting news. Promo-wise, we have a new Pope. If you didn't know that, I'm really glad you just came out of your cave. Needless to say, we're still excited about it. That's why Father Dave sat down with theology professor Shane Owens to talk about all things Pope Leo XIV.

A side note there's a great movie out called Paddington in Peru, which doesn't have anything to do with Pope Leo, but it's still a cute movie. They also have a great discussion about everything from St Augustine and the ancient church to our current issues with artificial intelligence, but they don't talk about sports, so not sure if it's really that interesting at all. Oh no, I flew and actually I got. I got airline shamed, I got stewardess flight attendant shamed. You mentioned, I think, last week that you had like the greatest airline experience ever when you flew back from Poland, or something like that, didn't you? The flight staff was, so they were just so good.

Okay, so in the yin and yang of life, Sometimes they can be overbearing and either just ignore you or constantly saying you know you're on, you're on. So these people were just great. They smiled all the time. Yeah, it was fantastic. Okay, so it was not your experience. I'm going to guess.

It was not my experience. So I'm flying to South Bend, which is a very small airport. I'm confident. The only reason it exists is for the six times a year that there are Notre Dame games that are here. It's a pretty small airplane and we're you know, we get on the plane, I have to go to the bathroom. It's like one of those things, like you know, when you kind of have to go to the bathroom but you're like, oh, I don't have to go to the bathroom.

I remember boarding, so I got on the plane and then we sit on the runway for a half hour. Ok, no bueno. Then we finally take off. Ok, great, and I'm waiting for the seatbelt'm like come on, come on, come on. And then they said we're about to start cabin service. I'm like, okay, well, if you're starting cabin service, I can go to the bathroom. That's what I thought, no turbulence. We'd been in the air for a while. There's only one bathroom. It's in the back of the plane. The plane's so small. There was like nothing in the back except the bathroom. So I get up.

I'm going to the bathroom Then I hear Attention flyers.

I don't know what they said. They said attention passengers.

And this is the part I remember. They said this seat yeah.

Yeah, this seatbelt light is still on. You must remain in your seats until the seatbelt light has been turned off. And I'm thinking okay, well, that's clearly for me because it's a small plane and I'm the only guy that got up and I thought that's a little passive, aggressive, because there's not multiple bathrooms, there's just the one. Then it gets worse, Like it went from passive aggressive to just aggressive. Then it said and I kid you, not to the passenger that is in the bathroom.

We are about to start our cabin service and you will be trapped in the bathroom. That's exactly what they said.

I mean, are you joking me? Like you're intentionally saying we're going to trap you in the bathroom, Like we're not going to move our cart for you?

Chuckles you know, there's only there's only 24 rows on this plane. Like are you joking? Like I'm going to get out of the bathroom and they're going to be like, well, we're not rolling this cart back to roll 11, buddy. Like you're going to just I hope you like the smell because you're going to enjoy your stay in there. And ha ha, I don't have a sense of smell. I was genetically designed to survive torture chambers like this. Thankfully, I just finished going to the bathroom and I went back to my seat and it was another five minutes before they came out. And that's right, they were trying to deal with the trauma of it all. It was really weird. I wanted I so badly, I wanted to yell from the bathroom my name is bob.

I'm not just a passenger. It's worse. I was seeing. What was that? It reminded me one time of um, I was flying and I got sick and was in the bathroom and although those people were really very sweet, I mean there was nothing I could do and I was just sick and, and you know, they were saying, you know, after you, and I said she was really sweet, I said ma'am, I'm, I'm sick, I I would love to say my, if I could. And no, she was. She. She says, you know, just go, just be careful, and all this. But yeah, some of when you're on a plane and yeah, if you have to go to the bathroom and you're not feeling, well, it's the worst, it's the worst, yeah.

Yeah, and I just thought like wouldn't. I don't know if I was a flight attendant, though I you know I don't envy their job and they deal with lots of nonsense all the time, but I think, gosh someone's in the bathroom. They probably I don't know have to go to the bathroom.

That's probably why they go. I don't know, I have to go to the bathroom. Yeah, that's probably why they go. Have you ever taken candies for the flight attendants? Candies.

Yeah, like give them chocolates, like give them candy, give them chocolates or something to thank them. No, do you? I've done it once. I saw somebody else do it and they're really appreciative. They said thank you for all you do and gave them a box of chocolates. So I did it once. Wow, if you want a free drink on the plane, it might help, and if you don't want to get locked in the bathroom, it might help.

It is. No, it's funny. I was talking to somebody the other day. I remember one of the first times my mom and dad used to live in Guam and we would fly there. I flew there a couple of times and one of the times was on a DC-10 wide body and this plane had a lounge in it. It was the craziest thing, oh my gosh. Yeah, I mean. You walk up towards the front and there was this little lounge with a little bar and a little couch. It's like planes have changed a bunch. My flight almost I think so.

My flight home most recently was at a380, which is that double decker plane. It's just massive, I mean it's, and they just cram it with people yeah, well, I mean there's a lot of people in it, but it's. It's actually a nice flight. Now I might have been upgraded, which made it a little bit nice.

I flew on a lower level too, where it's actually there's a lot of people, but it doesn't seem like you're just crammed in there. Yeah, some of those little planes like the one you flew. I'm glad they're short flights, because it's like being in a Volkswagen Beetle with your best friends.

On the first leg of the trip I was in the I because I was going to fly here with my wife. I had some credit stored up on another airline, so I don't. I usually fly Delta where I have status. I flew American where they don't know or care about me.

So the first leg out, I was in and I haven't had this happen to me in a while the back row. I was in the last row of the plane. Thankfully it was the window, it wasn't the middle, and the person that sat next to me in the middle was larger than I was and it was a yeah, it was crammed back there. Let's just say that. So I guess I would say it wasn't the most pleasant experience. You know, the first leg I was pretty crammed and the second leg I was airline shamed yeah yeah well, have a good week.

You won't have to worry about yeah, first world problems. You won't have to worry about that yeah, true, so we had a great, uh, we had a great conference this weekend. The power and purpose also, corpus christi, it was just great. We had about maybe 900 people. The theme was hope, which was just. It was wonderful. Mary Healy, david, kevin, how do you say David's last name, calavita?

Yeah, David Calavitta, he's great Mari Pablo, Pete Burak. It was a great, great team, but it was just. It was actually kind of nice to have a whole week, a whole weekend, having different people to speak about hope, because obviously we've talked about it and there's the themes that we've approached and the what we've talked about and the stories that we've shared, but then to hear other people talk about it and it was just, it was really refreshing, lovely. Uh, David Calavitta just talked about hope being incarnational and just these you know examples of hope and things that have happened in his life and the Lord just being faithful and good and kind, and how we have a tendency to get distracted and notice all the bad things that are going on or things that are not happening the way we want. And it was just.

It was a great conference, people were, it was fun, this was great. A couple comes up to me and actually two extremes. A couple came up to me. It was their 50th wedding anniversary and they said we wanted to be here at this conference for our 50th wedding anniversary, which was lovely.

And then this other couple came to me and they're on their honeymoon and they said we wanted to finish our honeymoon at this conference. I said, oh, that's great. And they said, because we met last year at this conference.

Really, they met at the conference. That's cool. They met at the conference.

We obviously stayed in touch and we got dating they lived about an hour apart from each other and ended up getting married a week ago. It was really a cool story, so obviously I introduced them, and the crowd goes crazy. It was really, really fun. Oh, that's great.

You know, when you said the opposite end of the spectrum I was worried you're going to have a couple coming up to you saying we're getting a divorce now.

No, no, no, not at all, Not at all. It was just. Yeah, it was a beautiful conference and it was interesting. We focused a lot as you and I have talked about as well the Romans text that says that the God of hope fills us with peace and joy through the Holy Spirit, and then the Romans 5 text is the love of God poured forth through the power of the Holy Spirit. And we just stressed again that hope isn't something that's manufactured. It's not. If you just try harder, you can have more hope. Or if you have a positive attitude, you can have more hope. I mean, those are important things, but ultimately, hope is a gift. It's a grace from the Holy Spirit that, to the degree that we continue to have a deeper relationship with the spirit of God, he continues to animate our life more. He becomes more personal for us. A fruit of that is is hope. So it was just. It was a wonderful conference, a blessing to be a part of it.

Good friends, it's almost always like a reunion you just see people you haven't seen. So it was great. You would have been proud of yourself. You did a really nice job.

So yeah, that's great. Yeah, and I miss being there, and I miss being there this week with the priest, deacons and seminarians. That conference is still going on, if you listen to this, on Wednesday. So, say a prayer for those priest, deacons and seminarians, and then we're into our first high school youth conference this weekend as well. So the summer conference season has really kicked off. Please keep all of that in your prayers.

Yeah, father David. As you're saying, hope is a gift. This is also the 50th anniversary of the priest conference.

Oh, is that right 1975, father Mike started started it, so that's kind of fun as well cool, that's really really great amen well, and speaking of what you're saying with hope, you know, being a gift of the holy spirit is something that is something we need to ask, ask god for, because we won't get it from the world and I think, as we, you know, I mean I don't even know if we're at war or not. I've been a little bit busy with some family matters, but you know, it's just. You know, bombing Iran and all the conflicts that we're hearing about. You're not going to find hope in anything media driven, or maybe it'll be a false hope, but really, you know, obviously we're keeping all of it in prayer and we're just asking the Lord for his guidance and wisdom and peace. And, father Dave, I think you said something about the Pope made a comment. Yeah, yeah.

It was. You know, he just it is Sunday Angelus, he invited everybody, something that we've done as well. Right, it's just a prayer. I mean mean it's easy to say there should be peace, which there should be. These are also complicated issues, I mean they really are. I listened to a podcast yesterday from a family that lives in just kind of normal family lives in Jerusalem and what their life is like and what it's been like since, well, their whole growing up and what it's been like since, well, their whole growing up. The father said he goes. I don't tell my kids now, but not every family lives within a bomb shelter in their apartment, but everyone that they know has a bomb shelter in their apartment. So, again, they're really complicated issues. I don't we're not going to get into all the geopolitics and all that, but we need to pray for peace and that's what the Holy Father invited us to do to pray for peace. You, just you said earlier, bob, that the world isn't going to do it.

One of the things that I had, the homily yesterday and it's relevant, the gospel, obviously for Corpus Christi is Jesus and the multiplication of the loaves. But it's interesting because the beginning of the gospel it said Jesus had cured all those who need to be cured, which is just a great statement, right? Anybody need to be cured. Line up, you're going to be cured. And then the disciples come to Jesus and they say you know, people are hungry, they're tired. What we need to do is we need to send them away so that they can go to town.

And I'm thinking wait, jesus literally just cured everybody. But the plan is, let's send them all away. Let's send them away from Jesus to the, to the world, to the town, and that's that's what the culture in the world wants to do. Right Is where Jesus is present, he's bringing healing, he's bringing grace. Well, wait, let's send him away. Where Jesus is present, he's bringing healing, he's bringing grace. Well, wait, let's send him away. So I said, part of our desire for Christians is no, we don't send people to the town to fend for themselves. Right, we keep them close to Jesus, and I think that's the invitation that we continue to have to make. Right is the world is ultimately going to send us away from him.

We ultimately need to go towards him, and I think it's an interesting reflection that sometimes we believe that Jesus will take care of our supernatural needs. We believe in miracles, like the bread and wine you know being transformed into his body and blood, and yet it's easy for us to lose faith with the natural needs paying the bills, getting fed, you know. So it is interesting, like, wow, you fed. You know. So it is interesting, like, wow, you do these incredible miracles. Oh, but gosh, they're hungry. So they need to take care of their natural needs somewhere else. And Jesus is trying to say I can, I can take care of everything. You know, if, if you just stay with me, I can, I can take care of everything that you need natural supernatural, you know.

I mean that's the prayer of our daily bread. You know, it's not just, it's not just something that is a spiritual feel good, it's also a very lived reality of the basic needs. But I find in my own life that I mean I, I'm very, I'm very bold and faithful when it comes to the future. Hypothetical, you know, like, oh Lord, I'd be a martyr for you If you, I would suffer for you. But like it's the day-to-day, like oh, like, wait, the electric goes a little bit higher. And not being like, oh, it's all over.

You know, I mean it's just really funny how, when it gets to the nitty-gritty of the details of the day.

Even. It's so easy to forget. Just go back to the, to the end of the day. It's so easy to forget that. Just to go back to the end of the gospel. Yesterday it was they ate and they were satisfied.

And that's the important part is that I appreciate the Lord takes care of us, but ultimately he satisfies us, and that may or may not look exactly the way we want it to be.

I mean, I think that's one of the things about hope is that hope doesn't mean that everything that's difficult or struggle is going to be taken away and it's going to be fixed rather in the midst of our situations, no matter where we find ourselves. The Lord is faithful, he's good, he's kind, he's going to take care of us and, and that's this grace that's available to us. So, but also you have, obviously, friday is the feast of the sacred heart, which is a great feast for the church, but also specifically for my community, because we are the Friars of the Princess and Friars of the Sacred Heart. In fact, I don't know what we're going to do. If we're going to have some celebration. That's a good question. Let me look into that, because it's the end of the Priest, deacons and Seminarians Conference. It's the beginning of the Youth Conference and I'm going on vacation the next day, which is probably the most important thing, but we'll deal with that later.

But, it's your anniversary. Yeah, on Saturday. Yeah, we got married on Saturday. It will be our 28th wedding anniversary.

Cork, great, perfect Cork. So, and what's cool about it is you know we were married on a Saturday, so it's falling on a Saturday. But we were also married on the liturgical feast of Immaculate Heart of Mary, which falls this year on this Saturday. So you know, if those of you listening, these feasts are movable. So after Pentecost is always the next Sunday is Holy Trinity, then it's Corpus Christi, and then the following Friday is Sacred Heart and the following Saturday is Immaculate Heart of Mary, and of course, that all based on when Easter is, so that moves around. So I don't. I guess it must have happened over these past 28 years, but it's kind of a it's a rare day when my anniversary date and my liturgical date syncs together and actually our good friend well, I don't know if he's your good friend, he's my very good friend Joe Hahn.

It's been 28 years, right, 28 years, and blessing to all you know the 50th anniversary and that first, you know, wedding praying for all marriages and families that are, for us to be a little bit removed from situations, particularly war and what's going on in the Middle East, what's going on in Ukraine. Honestly, being in Poland was a little sobering because it's obviously right next to Ukraine and whenever you go to Europe, in these villages, in these towns, there's monuments of war everywhere Because, you know, in Europe it's been a history of war as the United States, it's just often been somewhere else. So, lord, we ask your blessing and your Holy Spirit to be present in all the people involved and the families that have suffered. I mean, yeah, the moms and the dads and the children who have suffered, who are in fear. Lord, we ask for a supernatural, just a supernatural grace.

We don't know what that would look like, we don't know who all has to be involved and who has to receive that grace, but just bring peace in that region, lord. Bring peace in the hearts of the leaders who are making these decisions on every side. We're not worried about sides, lord, just bring peace, bring your presence, bring your healing, bring your light, your wisdom, your counsel. We just trust all of this in you and ask for the prayers of the Sacred Heart, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to bring peace, Amen. Amen.
