They That Hope Season 1 | 2025
The NBA playoffs may be unpredictable, but at least summer blockbusters deliver.
In this episode of They That Hope, Father Dave and Deacon Bob unpack the Cleveland Cavaliers’ devastating playoff collapse (RIP hope), debate baseball scandals from Pete Rose to steroid-era legends, and preview the biggest summer movies hitting theaters. From Marvel’s new Thunderbolts to the return of Mission: Impossible and a much-anticipated Fantastic Four reboot, they break down what’s worth watching and what might just be movie theater popcorn filler.
Alongside the movie chatter and sports rants, Deacon Bob introduces an exciting revival of a powerful small group ministry: Discipleship Quads. This free resource fosters spiritual growth through intentional, weekly gatherings rooted in Scripture, catechesis, and deep personal sharing. With new momentum and even a Spanish-language version, the Quads model is helping people grow in faith and community across the country. (Check it out at dquads.com.)
The episode wraps with reflections on Pope Leo XIV’s installation Mass, his moving words of humility, and the symbolic weight of receiving the Fisherman’s Ring. As the Church welcomes a new pope, Father Dave and Deacon Bob consider what might lie ahead in his papacy—including the possibility of a historic first visit to Ukraine.
As always, expect humor, brotherhood, and a reminder that our hope isn’t in playoffs or premieres—it’s in Jesus.

Transcript for Summer Movies (TTH ep. 215) 00:00 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) This week on they that Hope the Cavs are out of the NBA playoffs. 00:05 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) We talk about summer movies, which are exciting. We talk a little bit about the Holy Father, which is wonderful. 00:10 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I totally screwed up the audio on this upcoming episode. It's not about that. I hope it's okay. Hang in there. It'll come back mid-episode and we hope you enjoy the show. Theythathopepod podcastcom. Welcome to they that Hope, with Father Dave and Deacon Bob celebrating 2025. At Jubilee of Hope, and our hope is not in sports. 00:48 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) No, it's not. It is in Jesus Movies, jesus. Yep, it is, that's right. Sorry about that bud. 00:52 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, I'd like to. Let's begin with an apology. Who sponsors us? 00:56 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) From Father Dave. Did we do that? 00:58 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) thing. You're just trying to get out of apologizing. I don't have to apologize. It's not my fault. I don't have that much power. Okay, wait a second. So first of all, you told me that the Cavs were going to win. They didn't, they did not, they didn't even win one game. 01:12 So they won one, didn't they? No, no, they lost all the games since you said they would win. Secondly and I believe this was Post you sat there in this chair on this show and told the listening publisher, you told Sister Mary Beth, who hangs on every word, that the NBA playoffs are the most predictable playoffs of all sports. 01:35 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I did mention that you did mention that, didn't you? Well, guess what? This is vaguely familiar. 01:39 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) We've got a six, a three and a four seed team in the final four, just like I predicted. 01:45 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Sorry, about that. So if you were following Sister Mary Beth, if you bet on the games, we'll refund you. Yes, exactly. 01:54 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) So the Cavs are gone. Love you, cleveland. The Celtics are gone, jason Tatum ruptured his Achilles, he's going to be out for a while. That's heartbreaking for the celtics fan and a lot of people are saying this is a, this is a changing of the guard. These kinds of teams, you know, there's no lebron, there's no kevin duran, there's no yokich. We've got oklahoma city with sga, we've got the minnesota timberwolves with anthony edwards the-Man, we have the Indiana Pacers with Tyrese, halliburton, yep and the New York Knicks with Jalen Brunson. 02:32 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I find this hard to say, but I think I'm rooting for the Knicks. 02:34 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I think I might be too. They haven't had a championship in like 25 years. 02:39 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Oh, maybe longer, oh, I think so. Maybe, maybe it's been longer, maybe. But no, they said the city is just as excited as can be, so we can root for the Knicks. 02:50 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I think we could. I started to Google last time and the first thing that came up was Knicks won the championship, which was 1973. Yeah, so that's one in 25 years. Their last appearance in the NBA Finals was 1999. Okay, so I think that was what I was referring to. They haven't made it to the Eastern Conference Finals since 2000, so that must be so. What they're saying is it's been 25 years since they've been in the Eastern Conference Finals, which they are in with Indiana. 03:20 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Well, congratulations. I think the official position of this podcast is go next okay, there you go, folks, sister. 03:31 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Now what about in the west coast? Place your money on it. Do we care um minnesota? Okay, I'll go oklahoma, okay, all right there you go sister. So are we doing this now? So I'll go oklahoma city and the pacers are you? Yeah, yeah yes, I am, because they beat you. The enemy of my enemy is my friend yep, exactly. 03:43 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) So I've got the Knicks and Minnesota and you've got Oklahoma and Perfect. 03:49 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) It should be a lot of fun. That's right. Just because some people do listen to hockey things, do they really? They do, they don't the oh. Who's? The Toronto team? The Maple Leafs. Once again lost in a game seven Gone. It's their seventh elimination. 04:15 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) They were looking so good. And now? 04:16 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) they're gone and who beat them? The Florida Posers. So there's other teams involved, but I was just thinking of Paul Symington, who teaches philosophy. Here is a Canadian and a huge Leafs fan. He must be. He's wondering is there truth? Is there truth? Well, he's a philosopher, he believes in it, things like this shake you. 04:32 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Okay, here's our issue. We're keeping track of the Colorado Rockies, perhaps the worst team this podcast is brought to you, by the way, by a Franciscan University student. 04:41 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Go to faithandreasoncom and osvpodcastcom Perhaps the worst so far, tracking to be the worst. Make sure you like us. Give us a thumbs up or subscribe. I'm sorry, are you talking about something interesting? Yes, oh what. 04:54 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Here's what's going to happen. What Do you follow? Babylon Bee Sometimes. 04:59 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I do. 05:08 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I get, I don't follow them they follow me. 05:10 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) They put out a thing that said that all of their team got in trouble with PIDs performance inhibiting drugs. 05:14 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Are the Rockies that bad? Are they worse than the White Sox? Yes, yes, they're 7-38. Wow, they've not won two games in a row all year. 05:18 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) So it's really, really funny. Wow, that's kind of crazy. Okay, speaking of baseball, yeah, that's right, we talked about Pete Rose. 05:23 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) This is listen when you follow baseball or any sports really reported when they start talking about big questions facing the world, it is. Should Pete Rose be in the Hall of Fame? When he died months ago. We wept, did we? But we also discussed whether or not he should have been in the Hall of Fame. And what did I say? I have no idea. Okay, yeah. So they just came out. What did I say? I have no idea. 05:43 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) okay, yeah so they just came out what did you say? 05:46 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I said I probably said I don't know, I struggle with this one. Yeah, but they just came out, the commissioner just came and said, given that he's dead, he got quote unquote a lifetime ban and he can't do anything there at baseball. Yeah, that's fair, he can be voted on, okay, okay. So here's the question he broke the number one rule. He bet on baseball, yes. So I think today I'm tending to think he should be going. I mean, he's one of the best players who's ever played. All of his that they were aware of the rules that he broke. He broke them while he was the manager, not while he was playing, although one year he was a manager. Okay, while he was the manager. Not while he was playing, although one year he was a manager. So I think he should probably go in to the Hall of Fame with a stipulation on his little plaque that said he broke the number one rule of baseball. 06:35 They're also gonna let Shoeless Joe Jackson play, yeah, so actually what occurred was? 06:42 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) it was what you just said People who've had a lifetime ban when they are dead no longer have the lifetime ban, and now he's leaving it back to the peoples who vote on such things. So he didn't he didn't see they can't be right, they could say. They could say no, we don't want to do it. But what he the? The new statement is if you have a lifetime ban and you die, then people can make decisions. I guess now the big question is what if you are baptized? 07:13 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) you know if? If you are baptized, it depends if it's baptized of desire, baptism of desire or baptism of blood. Sure, that makes sense. That makes sense, that's all okay. So here's the issue, though. Okay, so you've got p Rose, who's banned. Yes, but you have some of the other players who were not banned, but because they used steroids, they haven't received it necessarily both, such as Kirk Clemon, barry Bonds, oh really, yeah, oh I think, yeah, I thought they just got in with an. 07:38 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) A Mark McGuire, same thing. Sammy Sosa Nope, same thing. All of those guys, all of those guys. 07:44 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) So none of them are in, and basically because of PEDs, not PIDs, no PEDs. 07:49 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Okay. So here's the thing Performance Enhancing Trust. 07:51 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Here's the thing, Just paying attention For Pete Rose. He bet on baseball, but that didn't. It didn't affect his statistics. 08:05 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I hits. He had 4,200 hits. I don't know if he was betting or not. He had 4,200 hits and he wasn't betting on. He wasn't changing any outcomes of games. 08:10 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I believe Not, as a player, correct, but the guys who used steroids that impacted their statistics. So I think, in some ways, if you use steroids, that should be Well first off. They've not been voted in and they may never be, but those guys in some ways granted, it's weird, he broke the number one rule and that is betting on baseball, but the guys that actually use steroids, who so far have not been voted into the Hall of Fame. 08:39 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) They benefited from the rule they broke? Yes, so I don't think they should know anything. 08:45 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Now. Are they allowed to now be voted? On though no, they've been voted on right, they just haven't been. 08:47 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, not enough people voted right. Yeah, so that wasn't a change in the rule thing. They didn't get a lifetime, exactly like that. Um, I agree with your statement. 08:55 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I I agree okay, let's just note that I would be more favorable. You and I agree, that's right may, may 19th. 09:02 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I'm more favorable to someone like pete Rose getting in to somebody Like Barry Bonds. Like Barry Bonds. Sammy Sosa should get in Just because he plays for the White Sox, because he plays for the Cubs. 09:13 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Now here's the question though Did you ever see the movie. 09:15 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I can't believe I'm quoting it. Eight Men Out. I did. Yeah, isn't that a great movie? Yeah, so Eight Men Out, if you like baseball movies or even if you just like movies kind of. I found it really, really interesting. It was about the 1908, does that sound right? 09:30 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Chicago White Sox 1908 or 1918, something like that. Yeah, something like that. 09:35 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Oh, actually we're going to have another, actually before you, and I report 1919. Right, so they threw a World Series, which is a big deal, and when you say they, you mean all the White Sox. Well, that's the question. It is the question who did it's Julius Joe. Well, julius Joe was not convicted of this crime. The others were. 09:56 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Yeah, but he was not Right and he batted some of like 400. He did really really well. 10:01 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, it's interesting. And yet at the time and gave him a lifetime ban. Now, did you go to any of those games? 10:10 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I did yeah, yeah. 10:12 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I was in. You're a big fan. 10:14 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Exactly. 10:15 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Exactly, but you know, you mentioned it's the number one rule in baseball. And the reason it's the number one rule in baseball, I would guess, is because of scandals such as the Whiteside. 10:25 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Scandal. Yeah, yeah, it brings in the integrity of the game, you would think actually a bigger rule in baseball would be don't roid up. 10:32 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) That to me would seem like a bigger number one rule. 10:36 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I mean don't throw the game. 10:37 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, obviously, okay, I guess that would be the number one rule in baseball. Yeah, and that's cheating, don't cheat, right, right, but cheating is also doing PEDs, and now that everything's legal, it's just so weird about the betting stuff. 10:48 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Isn't it, it is, it is. It really begs the whole question. Everybody's betting. You can't bet on your own teams. You can't bet on baseball. Mlb's telling everybody to go and bet. They're playing in stadiums sponsored by betting companies. The whole thing's kind of weird, but for the integrity of the game it has to be that way. You can't have them betting on their own team or not betting on their own team. That's what somebody said. It's like well, pete Rose bet on his own team, but he didn't do it every night. Well, exactly, exactly the nights that he didn't, right? So the whole thing was interesting. Okay, real quick, we need to get sister Mary back. Oh, I do want to say one last thing about baseball. Why don't you just ask me a question about what I think about PEDs? 11:29 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Well, you just asked me a question about what I think about PEDs. You know it was so exciting when the home run stuff was happening with Mark oh my gosh, Sammy Sosa. 11:36 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) When people say it was great for baseball. It was great for baseball, yeah. 11:39 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) So legalize it. 11:43 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Well, that's one of the arguments some people make is during that era everybody was juicing. So it's not like only Barry Ponds, the guys who were pitching. I just say let them juice, let them juice baby, the more the merrier. I mean like let's 200 home runs in a season. 12:00 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I want a baseball going through somebody's gloves. 12:02 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Okay, let me just ask how much you? What is a good season for home runs? Like? What would be a number, this many home runs per season? What do you think a really good season is For a person? Yeah, like Aaron Judge, what do you think he's going to get this year? Didn't he get like 60? Okay, yeah, you're in the ballpark. I was just wondering if you had any idea what a good season is 500. Oh, yeah, that's 495 home runs. 12:24 Okay, so here's another question. I mean, let Sister Mary Beth know, scot, let Sister Mary Beth know, scotty Scheffler won PGA. Yes, he did so. The second of the major was Scotty Scheffler. Rory did not play well, so there he goes. That was Bob, it's me, and okay, so that was it the Preakness. Wait, that's it about golf. Yeah, that's enough, that's fine. Preakness. Journalism won. Yes, the horse talking about horses now, right, right, right. So the Belmont is next week. Next, it's in three weeks. Okay, just give us, mayor Beth, a total heads up. The Kentucky Derby was won by Secretary huh. No, sovereignty, sovereignty. Preakness was won by Johnny Journalism. Right, all right. And the two of them did not race in the Preakness, so they're going to go head-to-head in Belmont. 13:10 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) They went head-to-head in the. 13:11 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Kentucky In the Kentucky Derby. Yeah, folks, you are going crazy. I know you're on the edge of your seat. 13:15 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) You're going to have to wait three weeks. This like takes like five seconds. They just kind of go around the lap, right? Yeah, yeah. I mean more than five seconds, do they? 13:26 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) all wear. 13:27 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) What do you think? What hat would you wear if you were a horse owner? I would wear one with a penguin and a hockey. 13:34 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) That's because you're looking at me. Oh, that's all right, let's put it over there. So I'm going to two baseball games in the next two weeks, Are you really? That makes me happy. Who's playing? The Pirates and the Brewers and the Pirates, and I don't know who else. 13:48 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) We're doing an alumni event next Tuesday. I don't know who else. I hope Skeen pitches for you. 13:52 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I haven't seen him pitch yet I know. I'll tell you who isn't pitching who Jose Alvarez or whatever it is. He got suspended 80 years for PEDs. 80 years Whoops, that seems like a lot. That's a long suspension 80 games. 14:11 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) We don't do lifetime bans anymore. No, that's right, we'll just do it. We'll just do it by decade. Well, that's our sports. 14:18 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Speaking of movies, okay, well, normally, just let people know we're going to have the promo between second and third, because they're all confused now. Yes, they do. Yes, they do here, I'll do this. All right, now, check, now, check, now check. There you go. Yeah, that was our promo, everybody, all right. So I went to a movie the other night, I know, last night. Yes, it was amazing, wasn't it Amazing? Yes, sister Mary Beth, can Sister Mary Beth go to movies? I don't know, sister Mary Beth, let us able to take. 14:46 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) You know, you should see the video right now. Look, I'm disgusted. I'm not disgusted. I just don't think it's a good idea for sister mary, beth and I to go to a movie. Well, we could. How's we all good? The three of us could do well, that's different. 15:00 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Well, yeah, it'd be fun. So myself and the friars went to thunderbolt last night. 15:04 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yes, thunderbolts thunderbolts, which was great. Yeah, it was a great movie, it's a new marvel movie. Uh, it feels like old school Marvel in a happy way, like just great ensemble characters, really good action. It had a guy named. 15:20 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Bob in it. That's right. Bob said the movie was so great so I texted him afterwards and I said now I know why you love the movie. 15:26 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) One of the main characters' name is Bob. Yeah yeah, it's great and I love that. At the very end it said the new Avengers and Bob will return soon. What was that whole thing at the very end with the four? Oh, I'm so glad you stuck around and said it. So this summer I'm not a rookie, I know, but that's a fantastic four. 15:43 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) That is a fantastic four. 15:44 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) But why would that be a big thing? Do those guys not like each other? Okay, so we're talking about there's a multiverse. 15:50 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) David, oh no not multiverse. 15:51 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) There's a multiverse, I know, but they're all going to come together. 15:55 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) No, why can't? 15:55 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) we just live in one verse. This summer we have the fantastic four. It's called First Steps. It's really cool looking, it's like a retro, futuristic thing. So that's happening in its own little different universe world of things. Well, by seeing at the end of Thunderbolts, there's this anomaly going on and they look in the thing and it's the Fantastic Four spaceship. It means that the Fantastic Four are coming into our universe or whatever universe you think so like two worlds collide rather than nations. 16:28 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Exactly, I don't like multiverse. Let's just live in the verse. We don't need a multiverse. You want to drive revelations? Exactly, I don't like multiverse. I know you don't. Let's just live in the verse. Yeah, we don't need a multiverse. You want to drive a verse? Yeah, yeah, okay. So Bob and I are going to talk about summer movies a little bit. So, first off, I don't know that we've ever talked. Not my first job, but one of my first jobs was working in a movie theater. Oh, working in the movie theater. Oh, really, I got fired. Oh, wow, I didn't get fired. Okay, but they didn't give us real clear. They said we could let friends in free. Oh, occasionally, okay, but isn't that what? 16:58 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) is occasionally, that's true. It's their fault, it's totally their fault. 17:03 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Apparently, 11 people in one movie was too many, yeah, so they didn't fire me. They just said Don't come back. 17:09 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Didn't fire me, they just said don't come back. Okay, that was good. Don't let the door hit you on the way up you can come back, but we're not going to pay you anymore. I think that's called being fired was great, though I ate all the popcorn. 17:19 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) What, what, what's your? Your snack go-to and movie beer and? 17:25 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) beer, beer. There you go. I don't really like the. Uh Gosh, you're a communist. 17:32 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) No, it's just you know and you know how they have butter flavor. 17:36 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, it's not, it's just oil. 17:38 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) There's a funny story about it. So when I was working at the theater, my brother it was my brother, I think came in and said you know? I said do you want butter and popcorn? 17:47 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) He goes that'd be great, but that greasy oil stuff that you have there is fine. Yeah, yeah, exactly so. When, when you think when you're younger, you think of like summer movie, what, what, what comes to mind? What was like the summer blockbuster movie for you when you were a wee lab, jaws yeah, yeah, probably okay, yeah, I don't even I would have been me. 18:07 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I'm gonna take a guess and then Google it. Okay, I'm going to guess like 76, 77. 18:13 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) When did Jaws come out? That sounds about right. Oh, google it. Oh gosh, am I going to do that. Yeah, so that was probably that was. Oh yeah, that was Bad Men's Bears. 18:22 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) You know the movie, the baseball movie. I do know that 1975. Oh it's a little late, yeah, yeah. So what's your? 18:29 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) summer blockbuster movie. I mean, I'm thinking Empire Strikes Back, because that was 1980. That was a summer movie. Yeah, it came out in May. That was a big one, but I was looking forward to that. The one that I probably think of when I think of a summer blockbuster would be ET. Oh, I remember that we had to sit in the front row. Yeah, it was awful. So that was just such a great classic. 18:53 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) That was one where they go Deplane, deplane, right. 18:56 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) No, that's Fantasy Island and that's Tattoo. Et's very different, but they're both short. Yeah, they're really great. That's good. That could either be ET or the. 19:08 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Untouchables? 19:09 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I'm not sure exactly what you're going for, but it all works Well. We have some really fun summer movies that I'm excited about. 19:16 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) So Thunderbolts kicked it off, which is a great beginning to our summer movies. 19:21 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yep Mission Impossible, the final reckoning. 19:25 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Yep Dung dung dung that's going to be out this weekend actually. 19:27 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) So go get your movie theater tickets now. 19:39 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I'm very excited. I think that's been a shockingly good series. You said what you want about that's been a good series. Yeah, it's been very nice. Every one of them I've enjoyed. There's good, they're actually yeah, and they all. They're next to me and they all stay in the same universe. There's no, there's no multi versus. Okay, you really, I am, can I okay. We have moms and dads Mostly moms, let's be honest. You listen right. Well, the dads have stopped listening, that's right. Another one of those sorts. Is there a movie out for kids? 20:00 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Well, I'm so glad you asked. Thanks, I don't know. 20:05 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) There's some live action movies from cartoons. 20:08 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I don't know how I feel about them. How to Train your Dragon is going to be live action. It looks amazing. Lilo and Stitch live action Looks interesting. I don't know. I just wonder, like why are we doing this? But then people go see them, so that's exactly why they do them. The Smurfs have a new movie coming out. 20:28 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Okay, so I would say there's not like like a ton of super exciting things that are that are coming up by far mission impossible. It's going to be the big movie this summer well, right. 20:39 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Well, let me throw out some other things that might rock that boat or friend. So I think mission impossible definitely will be up there. I think the fantastic four movie has a very good shot. It looks awesome. Fantastic for my favorite comic book I am. If they get this right, I would be so happy Superman. 20:58 The new Superman movie, that's right, that's right. You mentioned that that's this summer too. That's this summer. It looks absolutely amazing. Bob, are we going to go to these movies together? Well, I invited you to Mission Impossible. Some of us are working In the evening. Yeah, that's just dumb, you're right, you just work them too hard. Yeah, that's, that's your problem, you're just working too hard. Um, the Jurassic Park, that one does look kind of interesting. Scarlett Johansson, black Widow, that's right, makes a return. There you go, so now you're excited. 21:28 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Uh it looks interesting. 21:29 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I mean it could be really bad, but it could be really bad. 21:31 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) But it could be really good. Yeah, they always look good, I know they do, and you just watch the preview, that's all you need. 21:37 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, I mean sometimes that's all you need. So I think all of those movies are some of the oh. Here's something I'm looking forward to in a really twisted way Spinal. 21:49 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Tap 2. Yeah, no's the thing. We need to go back to Thunderbolts. It was a little cheesy. You know that. How do you deal with difficult things. It was actually really funny. You just tamp it down, but then it's kind of like a huggy thing. Let's all get better. I mean, you're not expecting a lot of deaths. Black Widow was really movie. I'm just a lot of deaths. Black Widow was very was really good. 22:14 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) You're just not remembering right. One movie that looks interesting is F1. Oh, that does look pretty good With Brad Pitt, with Brad Pitt and I that could be like uh-huh, I wasn't expecting that to be great, but it could actually be great and that might be really fun to do. Lee and Neeson, for some reason, is remaking the Naked Gun movie. Oh, that could be funny. I know that could be funny. 22:36 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) It could potentially be funny. 22:37 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) It could also be horrible, but anyway, we'll just see. So those, I would say, are the summer movie highlights. Folks, we're going to keep you posted. So which movies are we going to go see together? 22:47 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Either Fantastic Four, which is. When is that coming out? I think July. 22:51 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I think it's July 4th. We're going to have to wait until I get back. Wait what? Where are you going to be? I don't know. 23:00 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) That sounds great. I can't wait to go to the movie. It's going to be awesome, alright, hey, preview See, I see what you did there, I know. 23:11 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) But now you're just making it up. Yeah, I am making it up. Well, I don't need to read anything, because I'm actually really psyched about this. So something we did at Franciscan, a number of years ago is. We created a free resource called Discipleship Quants. It is a group of four people that you know, meet together once a week. 23:34 We created a guidebook. That is the driving force of it. It's scripture, it's catechism. What's fun about it is, at the end of that year, you stop and you start other small groups and I'm going to stop the music, okay, um, and you start other small groups and the idea is it's a growth model small group thing, which has been bonkers fantastic Like. We created it a couple years ago and then we started having some changes in the university and the project got dropped. Really, and as I would travel around, I started meeting more and more people that had done it and started it, and so we've reinvested in it, which is super cool. We have a really cool Spanish version of it, but check out dquadscom Dquads Stands for discipleship, discipleshipquadscom and there's a great website and fun videos. I actually designed it. I helped design it. 24:31 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Are you in the videos? I am in the videos as is Christy. Schubon. 24:34 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Am I? 24:35 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) No, I don't want to see that I could probably like do some b-roll from the wild goose thing or something. Okay, can I just say some of this ai video stuff, yeah, you can't even tell, true you can kind of tell, but you can't, you probably can't better than I can. 24:52 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, actually there's just several quads. 24:54 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) bob is saying we, but he did most of the work, so it's great. People should take a look at it. I mean there's nothing like being I mean, it's difficult, it means a commitment, it means somewhat of a discipline, but there's nothing like really sharing your life and your faith with somebody else. Amen, it's a great blessing what just happened. 25:16 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Well, I just turned on the recorder, but that's why I have that mic on there. I really thought I hit it. You know what? It's funny I was looking at that clock, you were yelling at me to get the clock up. 25:35 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I was looking at that clock and I was like I can't see it. The letters the numbers are so small. 25:42 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) So we apologize for the poor audio that we had at the beginning of this, but it should be okay because that's why we have the backup. 25:50 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Okay, good, good. I really don't want to do this again, I know. 25:53 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Me neither. I mean I enjoy time with you and stuff, but what we had was solid gold. It was pretty good, though. Okay, so we're just finishing up here. So now, if you're wondering, wow, it sounds so good now. Well, the answer is, yeah, I forgot to hit the record button on the main board. Okay, so we'll see what we end up with. Yeah, so I have no idea how long this podcast has been going on, by the way. 26:16 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) About 25 minutes. 26:17 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Boy. This is the kind of thing that people listening are like I'm so glad I'm listening to this part of the podcast. All right, we're sorry everybody, we'll focus in back on. So small groups are great. Dquadscom, let's wrap this thing up. 26:30 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) There you go. 26:30 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Well, first off we want to talk a little bit about the Pope. Yes, we do. Well, that's the whole thing. We want to finish with right. 26:34 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Okay, first off, you were on retreat. Tell us about it. 26:37 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I was on retreat. Yeah, praise Jesus, I was in. It has a few different names. What's it called House of Prayer? 26:43 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Yeah, down in Florida. 26:44 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Down in Florida, down in Clearwater. It was a silent retreat and it was great. 26:49 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) You might not notice. Wait, wait, wait what you said. It was a silent retreat, but there was too much talking. 26:56 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Well, I've been on silent retreats before. When I've just gone and been silent, this was a led silent retreat, a guided silent retreat, and there was a lot of talks, and maybe I'm just used to having longer periods of time where I don't have to hear somebody talk, but I kind of at some point was like this is a lot of talking. 27:12 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I would just like to pray. 27:14 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, it was really cool. He took the prayers of John Henry Newman and used them as poetry of John Henry Newman and talked about the spiritual life with it so it was very engaging and insightful. 27:25 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) How many people were on the retreat? There's maybe like 30, 30 or so it was a good group. 27:30 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) As a deacon and I think you have this too right you have a obligation to do a five-day retreat every year. Is that accurate? And I think that's a beautiful um, that's a beautiful thing to require of clergy yeah, does it. 27:47 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Is it five-day retreat or five? 27:49 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) days of retreat. I think it's five days of retreat because I only did three days. Yeah, because most people. 27:53 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I think that's one of the reasons why our conference for the in the summer, the retreat actually five days, so that satisfies our canonical retreat. 28:01 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) So that can be the canonical retreat yeah, Well cool. 28:05 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) So you missed a little bit about the Pope. I don't know if you heard, but we have a new Pope. 28:08 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I heard that Okay, you did. Yeah, Bob from Chicago. 28:10 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Yep and boy Bob is popular. I'll bet you, years from now, so many people are going to be named Bob. 28:17 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, it's going to be huge, or Leo? 28:20 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Yeah, good point Good point or 14th. So he had his opening mass, his mass of consecration. I don't know Okay. Inauguration? I don't think it's inauguration. Installation, installation, that's what it is. So it was cool. A couple of our friars were able to be there so they had some really neat pictures, but you haven't seen anything. It was really touching. It looked like maybe it was Tagliatelle that gave him the fisherman's ring, okay, and they put it on and he got really emotional. 28:46 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) It was just— Do they make that ring for that pope? Yes, yes, because they break the ring with the other one, right? 28:59 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I mean, traditionally, the Holy Father would seal official documents from the pope with that ring. Okay, so right, so they break the old, the previous one, um, but it was really, really touching but one of the quotes he said in his homily. At that he said I'm, I was chosen without any merit of my own. And now, with fear and trembling, I come to you as a brother who desires to be the servant of your faith and of your joy, walking with you on the path of God's love, for he wants us all to live as one family. Really, really beautiful. 29:23 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) That's awesome, really, really beautiful. I did read the homily. It seemed short. 29:27 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Yeah, I've just seen Pits and Pieces, was it yeah? 29:29 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) It wasn't that long. Well, yeah, I mean yeah in a good way. 29:33 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) It was very thoughtful, he was very thoughtful. 29:34 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) It was very to the point, but you didn't see him give it. I was wondering if you did read it. 29:40 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) That part was part of it the homily so I did not see the entire homily. No, I didn't. Did he do it in Italian? He did Okay, yeah, and I wonder who helps him write. He's got to help with all the different things he has to talk about, and I'm sure somebody helps. You also met with the vice president. Hope that turns out better than the last time and Marco Rubio so here's something that's interesting, though. 30:00 Okay, I think the Holy Father is pretty short. Yeah, because you see pictures of him. Jd Vance is 6'2". It doesn't tell you how tall he is. Jd Vance is 6'2". Marco Rubio is 5'9", and he looks like he's shorter than Marco Rubio. 30:16 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Interesting. So this is something we need to get to the bottom of Before I tell you what the internet told me. Why did you think the internet wouldn't tell me how? 30:23 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) tall Because I Googled it. How tall is the Holy Father? 30:27 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Well, I wrote in how tall is Leo XIV, okay, and the answer is 5'9". 30:32 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Okay, make sure it's not Francesco, because my thing came up and it was actually talking about Francesco, not Francesco, because my thing came up and it was actually talking about Francesco. 30:38 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Pope Leo XIV's height is reported to be 5 feet 9 inches. 30:42 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I'll bet you because everybody— 1.5 meters, I'll bet you, because everybody was asking since I Googled it yesterday. 30:49 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) While some sources may offer different figures, such as a scouting report claiming 5 foot 10 with a hat, the most widely cited and reliable information points to 5'9. 31:02 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) See, this is why it's important people listen to this podcast. You're not going to get this anywhere else, no way. 31:07 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) No way. Yeah, anyway, anyway, so he's taller than the average height of man. I'm 5'9. 31:13 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) This is freaky. Yeah, his name is. 31:14 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Bob. My name is Bob. He's from Chicago. 31:15 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I? This is freaky. Yeah, his name is Bob, my name is Bob. He's from Chicago. 31:17 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I'm from Chicago. He's 5'9". You're 5'9". I'm 5'9" On a good hair day. 31:23 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) Mostly 5'8". He plays tennis. 31:24 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) He does. You are 5'9", I'm 5'9". 31:35 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) What other? 31:35 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) sports does he play? Do you know something? Apparently he that go to gyms. It's not the kind of place, you'd expect to see a cardinal. 31:41 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) People called him Roberto. They didn't know who he was until he was literally announced pope. I mean, you're hearing all these stories, right, since everything's obviously—. 31:48 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Hey, that's the guy that spotted me. 31:50 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) That's right, isn't that Roberto? What's he? So it's great, it was great, it's really actually he just he's really stepped into it. There seems to be a confidence in him. Yeah, um, yeah, it's really, it's. It's been really beautiful. But it was weird watching him with the vice president and the secretary of state just talking english. 32:10 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) I mean yeah it was really, it was great. And pray for ukraine. I mean, I know things are not getting better, seem to be getting worse. I haven't again. 32:22 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) I've not been in the news this weekend, but I was Well, there was. Apparently a president had a conversation with Putin this morning and that they said that talks are beginning immediately, whatever that means. So peace talks are beginning immediately. Here's the question. People are speculating where's the first place the Holy Father's going to visit, and some people are saying Ukraine, interesting? Yeah, it would be interesting. 32:41 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) That would be cool. I don't think that's what it'll be. Well, if he goes to Ukraine, they're going to have a ceasefire as long as he's there, wouldn't? You think I don't know. That's a really interesting question. I mean, like wouldn't just his presence make people go? We should probably stop shooting right now. 32:56 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) You would think In hope, you would hope, yeah, but our hope's not in that. 33:02 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) No, it's in Jesus. It always brings us. 33:04 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) This is where we start. I think we've had enough for today. 33:07 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) It's a Monday night podcast everybody. 33:09 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) It is and we recorded dubiously. 33:13 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Indeed, so do you want to? 33:16 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) say a prayer. Jesus, we thank you for your love and your faithfulness. Help us love you better, amen. 33:19 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Amen. Thank you Jesus, thank you Father Dave. Thank you all for listening. I hope the audio wasn't horrible in the beginning. 33:25 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) We'll do what we can. 33:26 - Deacon Bob Rice (Host) Yeah, we're going to find out. Hey, you can shoot us an email, hopeatfranciscanedu. That's hopeatfrancisc. 33:31 - Father Dave Pivonka (Host) God bless. Go Knicks.
