Father Dave and Deacon Bob unpack the significance of the Ascension within the Paschal Mystery, showing why it’s more than just a “tag-on” after Easter, but a powerful reminder of Christ’s victory and our shared destiny in him.
They That Hope Season 1 | 2025
Why does the Ascension of Jesus—one of the great feasts of the Church—end up celebrated on a Sunday in most dioceses, while others keep it on Thursday? And what does that tell us about our faith, traditions, and the challenges of Holy Days of Obligation? Father Dave and Deacon Bob unpack the significance of the Ascension within the Paschal Mystery, showing why it’s more than just a “tag-on” after Easter, but a powerful reminder of Christ’s victory and our shared destiny in him.
But as usual, sports, movies, and mild chaos before the theology kicks in. Join them as they recap the NBA and NHL playoffs, share stories from the Indy 500, Monaco Grand Prix, and Coca-Cola 600, and offer a review of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (complete with seat mix-ups and a D-Box adventure). They also chat about Father Dave’s solo Thai food outing, pay tribute to the late George Wendt—aka Norm from Cheers—and reflect on how these everyday moments can point us toward joy, gratitude, and community.
The episode wraps with humor, brotherhood, and a reminder that no matter where you are—whether at a car race, a movie theater, or Mass on Sunday—our true hope is in Jesus Christ. And yes, the Topps Pope Leo XIV baseball card is still on their wish list.
Highlighted Sections
(00:00) Playoff Plot Twists, Fast Cars, and Father Dave’s Almost-Trip to the Indy 500
Father Dave and Deacon Bob kick off the episode with a rundown of the latest sports headlines, including the Pacers and Knicks battling in the NBA playoffs, and the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers making waves in the NHL. They also discuss the excitement surrounding the Indy 500, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Coca-Cola 600.
(12:07) Movie Review: Mission Impossible + Solo Movie Etiquette
Father Dave recounts his solo movie theater adventure to see Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning, complete with a funny seating mishap and his first-ever D-Box chair experience. They reflect on the perks (and occasional awkwardness) of going to the movies alone, and whether movie theaters are best for deep conversations or just a chance to unwind.
(20:03) Thai Food, Pity Tips, and Remembering Norm
The conversation shifts to Father Dave’s recent solo Thai food experience—one of the best meals he’s ever had, which he may or may not have posted about on Instagram—and a reflection on how dining alone can be a quiet joy. They also pay tribute to the late George Wendt (Norm from Cheers) and share laughs about a show that captured the essence of community in the most unexpected places.
(26:13) Relics on Display and Catholic Curiosities
The hosts dive into the story of St. Teresa of Avila’s relics being publicly displayed, exploring the beauty, reverence, and quirkiness of Catholic traditions. They discuss how relics inspire faith, connect us to the saints, and remind us that the Church is both ancient and alive.
(28:41) Thursday or Sunday? The Ascension’s Place in the Paschal Mystery
Father Dave and Deacon Bob unpack why the Ascension is a crucial part of the Paschal Mystery, how it’s celebrated differently across dioceses, and why it’s much more than just a calendar quirk. They encourage listeners to see these Holy Days as not just “rules to follow” but as moments to pause, celebrate, and remember the story of salvation.
(37:45) Closing Blessings, Pentecost Prep, and Hope in the Everyday
The episode wraps with reflections on Pentecost, Holy Days of Obligation, and staying grounded in faith—whether you’re at a playoff game, a movie theater, or wrangling kids at home. Father Dave offers a prayer for graduates, families, and the entire They That Hope community, with a reminder that hope is our anchor—on Thursdays, Sundays, or any day in between.

Happy Memorial Day, indeed. 0:01:10 - Father Dave Do you have any veterans in your family? My dad was, and my brother, and then uncles and uncles. 0:01:16 - Deacon Bob But Memorial Day is mostly the ones that passed away in service. 0:01:19 - Father Dave You know it's funny. Yesterday I was thinking about my cousin who did not pass. He was in Vietnam. 0:01:24 - Deacon Bob Did not have. 0:01:24 - Father Dave I mean yeah, who had a good experience in Vietnam, but he came back with a drug addiction and ended up dying. Yeah, and he wasn't quote, unquote a fatality of Vietnam, but he was a fatality of Vietnam. 0:01:36 - Deacon Bob But he was yeah, yeah Well that was a bummer way to start the podcast. 0:01:40 - Father Dave There you go Good start. 0:01:41 - Deacon Bob Yeah, Good morning everybody. Father Dave and I are hangry. Yes, we are. We decided that we were going to have breakfast together because we're friends but we made the mistake of saying let's do the podcast first. 0:01:55 - Father Dave Big mistake. 0:01:55 - Deacon Bob So this is going to be about an eight-minute podcast, or we're just going to start yelling at each other Hold on folks, which we never normally do. Hold on folks. But let's begin with the world of sports. Some quick updates, especially for Sister Mary Beth. In the NBA it looked like the Pacers were going to take over, but the Knicks came back and now the Pacers are up 2-1 in that series. Meanwhile, a similar story in Oklahoma and Minnesota Looked like OKC was going to run away with it, and then Anthony Edwards had a great game. So they are also up 2-1. Who? 0:02:24 - Father Dave do you have in that one? I have Oklahoma it. And then Anthony Edwards had a great game. 0:02:27 - Deacon Bob So they're also up. Who do you have in that one? I have Oklahoma city and I have the pacers. No, you wanted the knicks okay, so I'll give you the next meanwhile, in hockey, Edmonton is over the stars and the panthers are crushing the hurricanes, and it looks like we're gonna have a repeat of last year, which is Edmonton versus the panthers. Perfect, I'm all Edmonton, I'm calling it now. Oh, you is Edmonton versus the Panthers? Perfect, I'm all Edmonton, I'm calling it now. Oh, you get Edmonton then, all right. And those are those sports, but we have more fun stories because there was a lot of car racing going on there was. 0:02:55 - Father Dave So the Indy 500 was yesterday the Monaco the Grand. 0:02:59 - Deacon Bob Prix, the F1 Grand Prix, yeah, and then the Coca-Cola 600 or something like that. Yeah, wasn't somebody trying to do the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola Like, fly a plane from one thing to the other? 0:03:09 - Father Dave Did they end up doing it? I don't think it worked out. I only saw the last two or three laps of the Indy 500 from a friend of mine who invited me. Her family goes to the Indy 500 every time. And they invited me years ago and I had it all scheduled. I had it in my calendar, yeah sure. And then I ended up in the hospital. It's actually the only time I ever was really in the hospital. I had a block on my intestine, my large intestine, so I had to go in the hospital for about three days. So she texted me early in the morning. She goes, you know is everything-. 0:03:37 - Deacon Bob And that's removed now. 0:03:39 - Father Dave No, yeah, right, yeah. So she texted me and she said you know everything on Skype because I was supposed to be there like in three hours. It's like uh-oh. 0:03:46 - Deacon Bob Because I totally it's like no actually. 0:03:48 - Father Dave So every year we go oh, you got to come, you got to come, you got to come. So I did not go. 0:03:52 - Deacon Bob We should go, though. Didn't we say that we wanted to go to a NASCAR race? 0:03:56 - Father Dave Indy 500 is not NAS, just offended everybody. 0:04:03 - Deacon Bob Well, what is it? It's a car, yeah, but it's, they're just not NAS. 0:04:07 - Father Dave They're not NAS cars. 0:04:08 - Deacon Bob Okay. 0:04:09 - Father Dave Yeah, they're the fancy Indy 500 cars. 0:04:12 - Deacon Bob Yeah, that Is that, like the person that drives in the middle of the car, is that? 0:04:15 - Father Dave the Indy 500 car. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 0:04:17 - Deacon Bob So that's kind of like F1. 0:04:19 - Father Dave Yeah, exactly, exactly. Yeah, the cars maybe they're the same. 0:04:21 - Deacon Bob I don't follow enough, but it's not the nascar type, you know, chevy nascar is just like the kind of car you'd buy at like a local dealer. You'd put some stickers on it. 0:04:30 - Father Dave That's right, yeah okay, it's basically the same thing yeah, you just put the premium gas in my escape could totally, totally NASCAR it so no, it was funny. This actually is the first time I don't know the guy's name paulo or something like that from spain, first time a Spaniard's ever won it. It was fine, I mean, it's just. 0:04:47 - Deacon Bob I don't get it, I just so all these international people come in. You know it's like. 0:04:52 - Father Dave in the end it's an international world, that type of racing. 0:04:55 - Deacon Bob Wait, are we talking about the Indy 500? Yeah, in Indianapolis. 0:04:58 - Father Dave Yeah, but it's oftentimes international people that win that race, but they make huge money. Those like NASCAR not NASCAR, yeah. 0:05:07 - Deacon Bob I see you just did it. 0:05:08 - Father Dave Well, NASCAR make a lot of money too. The guys in the Monaco, I mean, they're uber, uber rich. Who won the Monaco? Did you pay attention to that? 0:05:16 - Deacon Bob Yeah, Francois. That's what I thought. He's excellent, he's the best. 0:05:21 - Father Dave The other thing is, I went to a baseball game. 0:05:24 - Deacon Bob I think it was Lightning McQueen it was. I went to a baseball game. All right, wait a second. Those are good movies, by the way. 0:05:29 - Father Dave Yeah, the Cars movies. Yeah, yeah, they are good movies. Yeah, we have a whole section on movies today. 0:05:33 - Deacon Bob Oh, we do. This is the second time. That's right. I look forward to that kids. 0:05:41 - Father Dave It will be, let's see. So I went to a baseball game Friday night. It's still cold here. 0:05:46 - Deacon Bob It is so stupid cold here it's 41 degrees in Ohio Like. 0:05:49 - Father Dave I love baseball and I actually put on an extra kind of long-sleeve shirt just in case. Sure, Freezing Like I really like baseball. And after the 7th inning Did you leave early? Yes, I said after the 7th. Well, I still waited 7, not 3. 0:06:04 - Deacon Bob Yeah fair. 0:06:05 - Father Dave I left. I said you guys, I'm just. This is ridiculous. Who'd you go with my executive team? We had three days of meetings and retreat and prayer and planning. 0:06:13 - Deacon Bob And then you forced them to go to a baseball game. 0:06:15 - Father Dave Actually, that's one of the things I've chosen. My executive team very well, they all like baseball. 0:06:20 - Deacon Bob Is this why I'm not on the executive? 0:06:22 - Father Dave team. I don't want to say that it's actually a prerequisite, but it's a prerequisite, so that was fun. The Colorado Rockies. Go say something. 0:06:32 - Deacon Bob The Colorado Rockies are a baseball team that are horrible right now. They are even worse than the White Sox from last year. Sorry, Pope Leo XIV. 0:06:40 - Father Dave They are. In fact, there was a big conversation Should they be relegated. 0:06:45 - Deacon Bob Yeah, they're just awful. Trade them out for a farm team. 0:06:47 - Father Dave They fired their manager. Actually, the new manager is doing a little better. He's 1-10. Okay, so he won a game. 0:06:53 - Deacon Bob Yeah, they're historically bad. I mean like since they started doing baseball, there's never been a team this bad. The White Sox have to be so happy about this. 0:07:01 - Father Dave Yes, that's true, you know, because was it last year that they had the worst season in the past 100 years. It's probably the Pope's intercession. That'd be my guess. Yeah, that makes sense. He's ignored somebody other than the White Sox. 0:07:10 - Deacon Bob Yeah, and the Lord turned his eyes on Colorado that's right or turned his face away from Colorado. 0:07:16 - Father Dave That's true. That's a good point. Good point, All right. And then the other is I'm going to a golf tournament this weekend. Oh, what golf tournament? Yeah, it used to be called the Memorial. I don't know what it's called anymore, but it's Jack Nicklaus' tournament in Columbus. I love him and a few good men. Yes, he was excellent, so it should be good. It's actually. It's always fun to go to a tournament and it's kind of a prep. 0:07:41 - Deacon Bob The US Open is in Pittsburgh. 0:07:43 - Father Dave Yeah, one of the greatest golf courses in the country is Oakmont in Pittsburgh, which is kind of crazy, but yeah, so Hopefully it won't be snowing. Well, no, but remember that tornado thing we had the other day. You guys lost power for a while didn't you? 0:07:56 - Deacon Bob You mean the other day like a week or so, yeah, a month ago. Yeah, I do remember that. Okay, that, and yes, we were with that power. 0:08:02 - Father Dave Well, some of the structures of Oakmont they put up these temporary structures. They got torn apart so they're quickly trying to repair those kinds of things. But it's a huge. Obviously the US Open is one of the four majors but it's going to be in Pittsburgh, so this will be kind of a tune-up for it, so it should have a good feel. 0:08:20 - Deacon Bob Will all the cool people be there? 0:08:21 - Father Dave Scheffler is the defending champion, so he'll definitely be there. But again, it's not the tournament. It's two tournaments before the Open, which is a really popular one, because some people take the week before off, so it's going to have. 0:08:34 - Deacon Bob You mean golfers do yeah. 0:08:37 - Father Dave So this will be the last kind of significant tournament before the Open, so I'll be going. One of our people that we do business with gave me a ticket, so it should be fun Nice. 0:08:49 - Deacon Bob That's all our sports, because we have so many other exciting things to talk about. But before we do, we're less than a month away from our Power and Purpose conference, one of the most popular student book conferences, power and Purpose will help you experience the peace and power of the Holy. Spirit. You'll hear and the purpose of the Holy Spirit. And porpoises. There's porpoises this year. It's a huge. We're going to fill the field house with water and you're going to get to play with dolphins. You'll hear from inspiring speakers, join in powerful worship and meet other Catholics from across the country. Most of all, you'll encounter the hope and joy that Jesus longs to give you. It's from June 20th through the 22nd. It's held right here on the campus of Franciscan University. You can register for power and purpose. Learn all about our summer conferences at SteubenvilleConferencescom. That's SteubenvilleConferencescom, that's StubenvilleConferencescom, and you will be there. I will be, I will be. What conferences are you doing this year? You know I'm actually it's funny not many. And it's weirding me out a little bit. So last year I decided to hand over the adult. Well, I decided to hand over the major adult conferences. That was my plan, like in terms of leading worship and then priest-deacon seminarians. They wanted a different musician because they're bringing—it's the father Right. And then for other reasons, I thought I was going to be involved in something on the Catechetical Institute side, so I didn't do music for Bosco Okay. So now I'm not doing any music for anything, and right, I'm going to. I'm hosting the youth conferences in St Louis and Halifax and I'll be speaking at Bosco. But even just doing three student book conferences is very unusual for me who used to do 10. Yeah, tell me about it. 0:10:44 - Father Dave So it's kind of weird. Have you done Halifax? Oh, I love Halifax. Halifax is a really it's been a while, but yeah, that's a really nice conference. Halifax is a very small, maybe 500 or 600 young people, very chill, beautiful out there, beautiful area yeah, that's funny, I've only done that one once. 0:11:00 - Deacon Bob But it office, I just tell them I like the small conferences like Spokane or other places. I enjoy it. You kind of walk around and you're not mobbed by kids. 0:11:13 - Father Dave You get to see everybody and talk to everybody. 0:11:14 - Deacon Bob Yeah, you just get to have really good conversations and stuff. So it's an exciting summer coming up. Yeah, I'm a little weirded out with it, but it's strange because I hear worship. This would be the time that I'd be getting on my set list together, so I'd be listening to the radio or Spotify or whatever. What are the cool worship songs? So I hear it as I'm driving. Oh, that'd be a great song. 0:11:32 - Father Dave I don't have to worry about it. 0:11:35 - Deacon Bob It wasn't a worry. It's kind of sad. Oh, I guess I won't sing that in front of a few thousand people this time, just go ahead to sing it in front of YouTube. 0:11:41 - Father Dave Yeah, that's the same thing. That's how Justin Bieber gets better. I could sing it on the podcast. No, no, no, no no Ouch. No. 0:11:49 - Deacon Bob Another denial. 0:11:50 - Father Dave Okay, so Saturday afternoon it was. I mean I was going to say it's a busy week, it was since graduate or the week before graduation, it's just been nuts. 0:11:58 - Deacon Bob Yeah. 0:11:59 - Father Dave So I got done Friday evening around probably 10 o'clock so I went to bed rest relax. 0:12:05 - Deacon Bob This is after your retreat, yep. 0:12:07 - Father Dave We're on a long walk and I'm thinking what am I going to do today? So I said, well, maybe I'll go to a movie, okay. Okay, are you okay with going to a movie by yourself? Absolutely, I figured you would be. I was talking to people, so I could read back these texts. I saw Thunderbolts by myself. I could read back these texts about people like you went to a movie by yourself. That's so sad. 0:12:26 - Deacon Bob It's so pathetic. It's the greatest thing ever. You don't really talk to people at the movies anyway. 0:12:29 - Father Dave No, that's exactly my point, right, it's not like you have this great conversation. So it was. I went to the Mission Impossible movie, which is the top movie this weekend, I'm sure right that, or Lilo. I had to grab a ticket. So I went online. Because you reserve do you reserve all movie tickets now, so you don't just show up ever, or I guess you could show up, but I figured it would be okay to get a ticket. It was the 3.50 showing, one ticket, single ticket. You could almost always get one. So I did. So I get into the theater right on time and I go and there's a guy in my seat and he goes. I don't know, I bought this, it's my seat, I said well, so he gives me his ticket. So I go out in the hallway and I'm going to go find somebody who works there. Well, I'm looking at it and his ticket is for Thunderbolt. So I go back and I said well, he technically wasn't in my seat, but that's another thing. 0:13:22 - Deacon Bob So in my seat, but that's another thing. So he was supposed to be in my seat. This is why maybe you shouldn't go to movies by yourself. 0:13:26 - Father Dave He was supposed to be in my seat, but somebody moved him and I said, sir, you're in the wrong movie theater, he goes. I won't say exactly what he said, because he cursed he goes. This isn't Thunderbolt. I said no because we're in the previous, it's Mission Impossible. Okay, so bought all three of these. And I said you bought all three. I'm sure mine 10F and she goes. Well, I bought all three of them. And I said I don't know what to say to you, ma'am, all I know. And then I said well, you bought three tickets, but there's only two of you. Well, yeah. And I said, ma'am, I don't know what to say. 0:14:03 - Deacon Bob All I know is her son. 0:14:05 - Father Dave I don't know why. Her son was in my seat and he goes well, is this my seat, mom? And she goes. Well, he says it's his. So the whole thing was ridiculous and it was mine right so thank the Lord, we got that all settled. 0:14:16 - Deacon Bob Didn't you just call an usher at this point? It's great that you're trying to handle this yourself, but you don't need to be a vigilante. Just walk outside. It would have been more. Just Get somebody in a polyester vest and say we've got some problems here. 0:14:30 - Father Dave I think that would have escalated it. I felt that I could deal with it without punches being thrown. Okay, All right so fine, so he moves and I sit down. It's one of the movie theories. Is it called D-Box? Oh yes, right when the seats shake and they turn and they go sideways and they go upside down. 0:14:46 - Deacon Bob It's not that dramatic, but they do have heat in them. Yes, they do, and I think air conditioning, yes, yeah. And you can determine how intense you want it to be right, so this is a nice experience. 0:14:58 - Father Dave I've never had it before and I was thinking to myself you know this would be a good movie to actually do that. So you've been in the movie, I have been. How long were the previews? 0:15:08 - Deacon Bob The previews Only about two hours 31 minutes. Yeah, it was long. Usually there's 20 minutes of previews, 30?. I often just show up about 15 to 20 minutes into, whenever the time was. 0:15:22 - Father Dave Well, I'm glad I didn't, because I had a little issue with my seat. 0:15:26 - Deacon Bob It took you that long to figure out the seating situation. 0:15:28 - Father Dave I mean it went through the whole things. You know, it had the several previews and then it had the popcorn thing in the movie and the phone thing. 0:15:34 - Deacon Bob So oh, I'm getting close. And then it kept going. 0:15:37 - Father Dave Another, I don't know how many. 0:15:45 - Deacon Bob You know what gets me mad at those? What's that? 0:15:46 - Father Dave commercials yeah, I don't mind movie previews. I like those, but like I don't need coca-cola coca-cola or insurance. 0:15:49 - Deacon Bob Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right. 0:15:50 - Father Dave Insurance, there was one of them so annoying, so the movie was mission possible. 0:15:54 - Deacon Bob The final one is it really final reckoning is what I think he'll be his last one. 0:15:58 - Father Dave I hope it is. 0:15:59 - Deacon Bob Yeah, it's a good finish yeah, I thought so too, and uh, two hours and 40 minutes it's a long movie. 0:16:03 - Father Dave It's a good finish. Yeah, I thought so too. Two hours and 40 minutes, it's a long movie. It's a long movie, yeah. 0:16:06 - Deacon Bob But I thought it was really enjoyable. It was really really fun, so before. I tell you what you should think about this movie tell me what you thought about it. 0:16:16 - Father Dave I thought it was really really fun. Okay, yeah, it was, I had to kind of thing, but it was. It was fun. It's so ridiculous. I mean the fact that there was a yes. 0:16:24 - Deacon Bob You know everything. Everything was crazy, it was crazy. 0:16:27 - Father Dave But yeah, no, I thought it was fun, it was action packed, it was sad, it was funny. It could have been a little bit funnier, but yeah, it was good, did I, his interaction sometime with who's his team. 0:16:42 - Deacon Bob Yeah, his team has some funny moments. 0:16:45 - Father Dave What are they called the A-team? 0:16:46 - Deacon Bob They're just called that. Yeah, that's what I thought, and if you can find them, that's right. 0:16:51 - Father Dave So it was good. So did I like it. 0:16:53 - Deacon Bob I think you did like it, but I don't think you liked it as much as other Mission Impossible movies. I think you thought about. That is exactly what I thought about. Can you even think about the other Mission Impossible movies? 0:17:09 - Father Dave Sure, Is this something? Yeah, I mean, can you name them all? No, absolutely not. I could not name one of them. 0:17:13 - Deacon Bob You couldn't name Mission Impossible 3?. I could name 4, Ironically, those are the ones that don't have numbers, what their names are. Okay, yeah, yeah yeah, no, I thought they were good. Yeah, they're fantastic. 0:17:25 - Father Dave I didn't realize the whole series has been going on for 30 years with him. 0:17:29 - Deacon Bob Yeah, yeah, it's been a crazy run. When he started those movies gosh yeah, that was 30 years ago with the first Mission Impossible he had an interesting vision of it because Tom Cruise was always the executive producer of it. He wanted a different director, every movie in a different style. So the first movie which I still think is one of the best ones Brian De Palma, who was known for kind of a Hitchcockian thriller vibe director and I was actually looking this up on it was only 88 minutes. It was a very short movie but it's a really great one to see a young Tom Cruise in it and Jon Voight they had a lot of callbacks in this last one. The next one was John Woo, who also did Face Off. He was like a fight Hong Kong director. I think. He directed a lot of Jackie Chan movies. And then the third one was JJ Abrams, who did this weird like CW romance stuff. I thought that was the weakest one, but they turned the corner, I thought, when they had the team. That's why I was bringing this up, because when they brought in a team of people Simon Pegg, the guy who played Luther that's when I think it got really really fun and they had a great. Ghost Protocol is fantastic. That was when he's in Dubai. Fallout was really good. That might be the best one. I thought. I loved Final Reckoning. I thought that was a great movie and this one I thought was good. I thought it was. I hope it's the last one because my only complaint of it is it felt too nostalgic. It felt like it was celebrating itself a little bit too much by reaching with all the callbacks of the previous movies. And again, if this is the last one, great, you can do that and you know, even having the guy being the son of John Voight from the first movie and things that were a little unnecessary, I didn't think the bad guy was that great, was bad enough? Yeah, I mean he was just kind of like a good looking dude he didn't play much of a role. 0:19:24 - Father Dave He was just kind of like a good-looking dude. 0:19:26 - Deacon Bob He didn't play much of a role. 0:19:27 - Father Dave The entity was the one they were really fighting with, Right yeah. 0:19:32 - Deacon Bob The thing that was interesting. It certainly left it open to another movie. You know also. 0:19:35 - Father Dave I just wish at the end they would have had like a beer together or just smash that I won't get into it, Right, yeah please destroy that. Okay, but so the movie ended, but it's a great movie it is. 0:19:41 - Deacon Bob Go see it. I think you'll enjoy it. 0:19:43 - Father Dave We don't know if you can go to movies, sister, but if you can go, all right. So then afterwards I walk out. It's probably 7 o'clock at night and I'm hungry, sure, did you go to Red Robin without me? No, not at all. Oh, I went to a food, yeah it is so good. 0:20:03 - Deacon Bob What's the opposite of Red Robin? 0:20:05 - Father Dave It's so first time I've ever eaten there, because I love Thai food. So I said you know I'm going to do this, so what do we think? 0:20:10 - Deacon Bob And again, you and I, Eating at a restaurant by yourself is a little weird. 0:20:13 - Father Dave I was going to go there because you and I are a little different, but you travel a lot by yourself as well. 0:20:17 - Deacon Bob So you have to at times if there's a bar, oh Like I don't mind eating at a bar by myself, yeah. You know, like at Red Robin they have a bar. 0:20:26 - Father Dave Yeah, and you just sit there and eat. 0:20:27 - Deacon Bob But I wouldn't sit at like a table all by myself and eat. Ever, Well, I mean, if I had to, but I would. I'd rather grab like Jimmy John's and eat it in the privacy of my room or something like that, or your car, if I, I don't know if I'd eat in my car. 0:20:41 - Father Dave No, I went and had a really great, in fact one of the best Thai meals I've had. Oh my gosh, it was so good. 0:20:48 - Deacon Bob Is that really spicy? 0:20:49 - Father Dave Yeah, I always get it. This particular place does it between one and five and I did a four and he goes sir, that's very hot and I go, trust me. So I got no wonder you pineapple, peppers and onion and then whole grain brown rice. That sounds horrible. It was so, so delicious. 0:21:14 - Deacon Bob It really was. It sounds like something somebody would prescribe to you Like. 0:21:16 - Father Dave when I got out I texted everybody and said I just had the best time meal. 0:21:20 - Deacon Bob Did you eat it at the restaurant or did you eat it in the car? No, I ate it at the restaurant. 0:21:23 - Father Dave You mentioned the car as a possibility, because I'm okay with eating at a restaurant by myself, although I have had some weird experiences over the year. One time I was on Valentine's Day and the waitress. She must have thought I was in my clerics too. I was just in a t-shirt for this, but she must have felt sorry for me, or something like that. So she says on the receipt happy Valentine's with a couple hearts. 0:21:46 - Deacon Bob It was like this is just awkward. She was also probably upset that you took one of her tables because other couples were waiting desperately to have dinner on Valentine's Day, but I usually tip. 0:21:54 - Father Dave well, oh, do you. So she was probably happy. 0:21:58 - Deacon Bob Yeah, well, for a single guy, I'm sure that's like $3. 0:22:01 - Father Dave Several people. This one text, this one text chain was like this one friend of mine. She just thinks it's so ridiculous. She and her husband, they were mocking me. They said why didn't you go? You could have gone with someone A lot of people would want to go to a movie with you and say, yeah, and I'd like to go by myself. 0:22:18 - Deacon Bob It takes a lot of work. I actually went to a pinball bar by myself over the weekend and I had a lovely time. I believe that Was that downstairs of your house? No, no, it wasn't. It was like a bar in Oakdale. They had the new King Kong pinball machine and I wanted to play it. 0:22:32 - Father Dave Okay. So here's my thing, though I figured you would be fine with a movie by yourself. Yes, so from that perspective because what do you do you? Literally it is the most non-social thing. And so this one person said to me yeah, but what's great? 0:22:51 - Deacon Bob about movies. You, you walk out of the movie and then you want to be able to chat. Yeah, you want to talk to somebody. 0:22:54 - Father Dave Like, when you walked out, what were you thinking? It's like I was thinking I was hungry, so I was going to go eat Thai food by myself. Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, so it was lovely. It was the best day I've had in my life. 0:23:04 - Deacon Bob Well, that's great. I'm so glad you're part of a religious community. There you go. Other entertainment news George Wendt passed away. Yeah, Norm from Cheers and Da Bears comedy sketch from Saturday Night Live. 0:23:20 - Father Dave I didn't meet George Wendt, but I was from here to you. Oh, next to George Wendt. 0:23:25 - Deacon Bob Well, that's kind of meeting him. 0:23:28 - Father Dave What was this environment? National Championship Notre Dame versus West Virginia 1988. 0:23:34 - Deacon Bob Wow, he was right behind us. And who is he rooting for Notre Dame? He's a Notre Dame fan, is he really? Yeah, yeah, oh, that's great. Yeah, is he really? 0:23:40 - Father Dave Yeah, yeah, oh, that's great. Yeah, so I was in seminary. No, I was in school. I was an undergraduate at the time, so Cheers was in its heyday, heyday, yeah, yeah. So everyone was, as you can imagine, I'm sure, his whole life some of the memes going up to heaven Norm did we like Cheers? We loved Cheers. We were very charged yeah, so. God bless Norm. 0:24:01 - Deacon Bob It's weird to think that like— it's a dog-eat-dog world and I'm wearing milk bone underwear. He had great opening lines of it. One of my favorite was women you can't live with them. Pass the beer nuts. It is scary to think, though, like you remember when it first came on, coach, the really old guy behind the bar he was like 56. 0:24:26 - Father Dave Are you serious. 0:24:27 - Deacon Bob Yes, I saw that somewhere, Like he was 56 years old and he was the ancient guy. 0:24:32 - Father Dave I mean thankfully for me, I'm under 56. Woody was the early 20s right. 0:24:36 - Deacon Bob Yeah, Woody was like a little kid. That's really where he started. 0:24:38 - Father Dave Yeah, that's absolutely his launching point, Harrelson? What's his first name? 0:24:43 - Deacon Bob Ted Hanson, woody Harrelson. Yes, but what's his? 0:24:47 - Father Dave name in the cheers. It's Woody too, isn't it? 0:24:50 - Deacon Bob I think it might be. 0:24:52 - Father Dave I don't know. 0:24:52 - Deacon Bob I don't know either. 0:24:54 - Father Dave All right, there you go, folks. That's our entertainment. 0:24:57 - Deacon Bob And it was very entertaining. Before we go on to other specific faith news, we're just praying for the Ukraine. And the craziness I can't make heads or tails of it it sounds like we're exchanging prisoners and the war is escalating. It just keeps coming. 0:25:14 - Father Dave And. 0:25:14 - Deacon Bob I think Trump tweeted something about Putin being crazy. 0:25:17 - Father Dave Yeah, which you know, and the Holy Father, although are you following the Holy Father on Instagram? 0:25:22 - Deacon Bob Oh, I didn't know, I'll start. I don't do much on Instagram, but I'll start doing that. 0:25:26 - Father Dave Yeah, it was funny. He opened his account I don't know he had. The first time I was aware of it. He had 800,000. Yeah, of course, and now he has 20 million or something like that. Yeah, do you know how many Messi has? No, half a billion followers People following him on Instagram. Half a billion followers, people following him on Instagram Isn't that crazy? 0:25:46 - Deacon Bob Hey, speaking of Pope Leo, did you know that there was? They released. Topps released a baseball card for him. I did, I saw that and it was like the highest selling non-baseball baseball card ever. That's so ridiculous. But yeah, we'll pray for the keep praying for peace in the world. Yeah, I mean it doesn't seem like it's getting any better. 0:26:03 - Father Dave No, I think the situation in India and Pakistan is somewhat settled for the moment. That's kind of a tinderbox at times and yeah, so we continue. But yeah, the Middle East is still crazy, yeah. 0:26:13 - Deacon Bob So, anyway, let's talk about faith stuff and maybe just a quick funny news piece. I don't know if it's funny, but Teresa of Avila, her remains, were exposed, I guess. 0:26:27 - Father Dave Yeah, they did it. I wasn't aware of this. You were explaining it to me. Yeah, they did a procession. I don't know why they did it. 0:26:32 - Deacon Bob And I don't know why they did it either. The last time they did it was 1914, but every once in a while they open up the coffin. I love being Catholic and she's sealed in it in glass underneath and it's. I mean, it basically looks like something you'd see from the Crypt Keeper. I mean just her skull with the habit on it. But, like you know, 200, you know almost a quarter of a million people flocked and they did a parade and many people were also saying Catholics are so weird. But I don't know, I think it's kind of cool. We're okay with that, though. The weirdness yeah. 0:27:05 - Father Dave With weirdness? We're okay with that. Though the weirdness? Yeah with weirdness, we're okay with that. I love taking people to Rome and just talk about some of the things that we've done in the church. I joke that if the rapture is like the Protestants say and it's not going to be but bones flying everywhere, I don't want to be in Rome, because there's going to be bones flying all over that city. 0:27:23 - Deacon Bob Yeah, but no very few Protestants actually believe in the Ravish. Yeah, that's very, very, very few. 0:27:27 - Father Dave But both of them, they do. 0:27:28 - Deacon Bob Yeah, kurt. 0:27:29 - Father Dave Cameron yeah, there you go. So it was. Yeah, I had not heard you asked me about it this morning. 0:27:34 - Deacon Bob Yeah, I had not heard about it. I love Teresa of Avila. If I had known about it, I wouldn't have done anything You'd have? I mean, you'd think the answer would be Avila, but the answer isn't Avila, the answer is actually. 0:27:47 - Father Dave But they just processed through the hometown. 0:27:49 - Deacon Bob Yeah, it's. 0:27:50 - Father Dave It's like Tess is coming. 0:27:53 - Deacon Bob Something like that, alba de Tormes, a town ringed by rolling pastures in western Spain. The remains of the Spanish saint were on display this month. Well, I missed that, but I guess the coffin itself is only four feet long, so she was not very tall. I'm guessing she was like Yoda. 0:28:13 - Father Dave I wonder if they did something, arranged her bones in some way, like in a short way. Yeah, yeah, they could have. 0:28:20 - Deacon Bob I don't know, that's just again. 0:28:22 - Father Dave I love being Catholic and we do some things that are just different. 0:28:25 - Deacon Bob Yeah. 0:28:25 - Father Dave I mean, like why there must be some reason why this year I mean the last time, 2014,. Did they say we're going to do it every 109 years or 111 years? It? 0:28:33 - Deacon Bob is an unusual thing. Yeah, it is an unusual thing, I don't know. 0:28:37 - Father Dave All right, well, praise God. Pray for us, st Teresa. 0:28:40 - Deacon Bob Yeah. 0:28:41 - Father Dave Amen, and Thursday is the Ascension. We're going to give people a great deal of information. The Ascension— we looked something up beforehand. It's very impressive —is being moved to Sunday in most dioceses in the United States. 0:28:53 - Deacon Bob It's almost always moved isn't it. Yeah, Except unless you are in the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia and Omaha. 0:29:06 - Father Dave Yeah, way to go Omaha. 0:29:06 - Deacon Bob It's kind of like everybody in the Northeast and Omaha. Yeah, you celebrate it on Thursday. It is a holy day of obligation. For everybody else, the feast is moved to Sunday. Okay, but let's think about this, okay. 0:29:18 - Father Dave You're in on one side of the street and it's a holy day of obligation, and if you don't go, it's serious. On the next side of the street it is not. Isn't that a little odd? Yes, but so I'm. It's interesting Holy Day of Obligations are at the discretion of the bishops of a particular region. Country yes, the United States, I think. Canada only has two Holy Day of Obligation yes, so that's why we need to take Canada over. 0:29:46 - Deacon Bob That's why they need to be the 51st day. 0:29:48 - Father Dave That's right, yeah we're thinking of their souls. I think Christmas and maybe December 8th, immaculate Conception I'm not positive, but I find Holy Days of Obligation a little. 0:30:01 - Deacon Bob Yeah, actually it's just Christmas and Mary, mother of God. 0:30:04 - Father Dave Oh Mary, january 1st, okay yeah. And Mary, mother of God. Oh Mary, january 1st, okay yeah. So again, it's just kind of a weird thing that in Canada it's not an obligation, in America it's an obligation of, and if you're not faithful to it it's sinful. Yeah, it's just a strange thing. 0:30:22 - Deacon Bob I would not be opposed. But this would also be true in other countries that have different holy days of obligations. Is that an incorrect statement? What do you mean? But this would also be true in other countries that have different holy days of obligations Is that an incorrect statement. I know there's some standard ones, but, like some countries have more holy days of obligations. 0:30:34 - Father Dave I don't know that. 0:30:35 - Deacon Bob I don't know that either. Well if you don't know it, then I don't know it. 0:30:37 - Father Dave Okay, I take it all back, yeah. So yeah, it's just kind of a. I would not be opposed. 0:30:43 - Deacon Bob Well, if you're the bishop of Steubenville and you might be- Could, be. I mean, it's basically up on a wanted ad right now. Yeah, what would you do? Would you make it a holy day? I would probably have fewer holy days, so you wouldn't make it a holy day. So you think it's actually weird that the people that are doing it are doing it Like, what's your take on this? 0:31:05 - Father Dave Yeah, because, first off, it's total tradition. I mean it's total small tradition at the discretion of the local ordinaries. Okay, I think it places an obligation, the reality, an obligation that most people, let's be honest, don't pay attention to. Now, that's not to say that we shouldn't do it just because people don't pay attention to it, but what is the purpose of it? What is the purpose of a holy day of obligation? To give it some sense of not uniquely, what's the word I'm looking for, bob? It's a feast, yeah solemnity, yeah right, it's a feast, it's a solemnity right, yeah, so why not go ahead and move it to Sunday, when everybody is going to be present to it, instead of having it as an obligation? 0:31:50 - Deacon Bob There are six holy days of obligation outside of Sundays in the United States. Can you name them all? Probably Okay, we'll just do that next week, yeah All right, I'll do it right now. Okay, go ahead and read it for us Mary, mother of God, january 1st, march 25th Well, actually, the Ascension of Jesus is on the list, with a little asterisk. 0:32:11 - Father Dave Okay, because some places it's there. Oh, so it's alphabetical. 0:32:14 - Deacon Bob Okay, wait a second. What's alphabetical? 0:32:18 - Father Dave Do they have them in alphabetical? 0:32:19 - Deacon Bob listing no it's in date. 0:32:20 - Father Dave Chronological. Well, the Ascension isn't going to be the next one. The Ascension is going to be the next one, is it Okay, okay, well what do you think's in between? I was thinking March 25th, but it's not a holy. Yeah, march 25th it's not a holy day. It's not a holy day, it's just a feast day. 0:32:32 - Deacon Bob No, it's just a feast day, march 25th, being the Annunciation right I was baptized in them August 15th the Assumptionception, and December 25th Christmas. 0:32:46 - Father Dave But even those, so the ones that are. So Ascension Thursday is obviously always on Thursday, yes, but the other dates, so they move it. If it's Friday, we'll move it. If it's Saturday, we'll move it, True, if it's Tuesday, we're not going to. It's just, it's so random. So just get rid of them, just celebrate them differently, yeah. 0:33:02 - Deacon Bob Yeah, without the penalty of sin. 0:33:04 - Father Dave Yeah, right, right, the obligation here in Steubenville. It's not an obligation, so it's not like we're getting rid of it, we're just moving it to Sunday rather than having it on Thursday. 0:33:20 - Deacon Bob So just yeah, don't place the obligation on a weekday to it and move it to Sunday. 0:33:24 - Father Dave It is odd to me, and I don't know what, the logic of some of these choices are Like, for example, I would think that Good Friday would probably trump some of these, you know like, just in terms of oh, I mean Ash Wednesday the number of people that go to Mass on Ash Wednesday and it's not an obligation, I mean it's a hundred times more People wouldn't think about not going to Mass on. 0:33:44 - Deacon Bob Ash Wednesday Do you know the top four most attended liturgies? Have we talked about this? 0:33:49 - Father Dave No, Christmas, easter, ash Wednesday and. 0:33:52 - Deacon Bob Mother's Day. Mother's Day. That's interesting I would have said yeah. 0:33:54 - Father Dave Mother's Day. That's great. 0:33:55 - Deacon Bob Yeah, that's interesting. It's not Holy. 0:33:58 - Father Dave Well, that is Holy Day of Obligation, because it's a Sunday. No, so that's Go ahead and judge me. 0:34:03 - Deacon Bob Yeah, we'll send hopeatfranciscanedu everybody and you can judge, father Dave. 0:34:09 - Father Dave And then just the last thing we'll say and we'll talk about it more later is pay attention to the readings, because everything is moving towards Pentecost. 0:34:15 - Deacon Bob Yay, well, can I say something actually about the Assumption? 0:34:18 - Father Dave Yeah, yeah, sure, or the. 0:34:19 - Deacon Bob Ascension. The Ascension, yeah, sorry, the Ascension, right, asc, it's on God's power, it's on Jesus' power. The assumption is because God does it for Mary, but the ascension of Jesus, I think it's often overlooked as part of the paschal mystery. That is our salvation. We talk about the paschal mystery, which is the suffering, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, and this isn't just a tag-on, like the Church has always seen that His definitive entrance into heaven is a huge part of our salvation. I think sometimes, because it's 40 days later, we're like, oh, it's kind of that thing he did after he hung out for a little bit. But really, when Jesus enters heaven, body and soul, that is the definitive opening of heaven for everybody else, body and soul, and that's why it's such an important feast and celebration. It really culminates in everything Jesus did. It's like him getting the trophy and walking through and us being able to share in that victory because his work, his redemptive work, hasn't been done yet. In all of these times of Easter, as we've been celebrating it, it really is that ascension moment that you can say he's done it, he's celebrating it, we can now live in it. And then we have a novena, a nine-day preparation for the gift of the Holy Spirit. 0:35:41 - Father Dave Amen, we should make that a holy day of obligation. It's so important. 0:35:44 - Deacon Bob The Pentecost. 0:35:45 - Father Dave No. 0:35:46 - Deacon Bob Oh, the ascension, yeah to make that a holy day of obligation. 0:35:48 - Father Dave It's so important. 0:35:49 - Deacon Bob The Pentecost? No, oh. The Ascension, yeah yeah, but only in some places. 0:35:52 - Father Dave I would add, I would make every day a holy day of obligation. I go to Mass every day anyway, so it wouldn't matter. It doesn't matter to me anyway. 0:35:56 - Deacon Bob Yeah, people that get worried about that. Sometimes I talk to people I'm like well, did you go to Mass every day? Yeah, sometimes I think we get too caught up in the legalism of it, which is wait first. 0:36:13 - Father Dave All you're living a holy life. Are you devoted to the faith? Do you believe in the Lord? Yeah, do you believe in Jesus? I love it when people like that are complaining about the church. That's not going to be the reason. 0:36:35 - Deacon Bob If you don't go into heaven it's not going to be. I'm not sure if you were really serious about your faith. So I can see the other side of it, which is to say, when we take away Holy Day of obligations, it does feel like we are accommodating ourselves to people that might not have gone and yet those people might not be going on a regular basis anyway. So I see the other side. I know some people that really get upset when holy days are moved or when the church seems to try to. I mean the name obligation is such a negative word in the English language, but I do kind of, and it ought not be, because obligation is a word of beauty and blessing. 0:37:05 - Father Dave I mean you're obligated to love your family and you're obligated yeah. 0:37:09 - Deacon Bob So I actually like the difficulty that Holy Days of Obligation can bring, that I have to go, oh shoot. I like it as a dad. But, you're going every day anyway. Well, I'm going every day, but I like it as a dad because I get to do something where I get to talk to my kids and get them to church. It's just an opportunity for a conversation and it's fun to try to figure out when are we all going to go to Mass. 0:37:32 - Father Dave I'm going to chat with Jen and see if it was her ascent. Yeah, let's see how much when you had six little kids. 0:37:37 - Deacon Bob Yeah, exactly, so I guess we might be slightly disagreeing on this point. 0:37:40 - Father Dave I don't know if we are or not. 0:37:42 - Deacon Bob Well, what are you saying now? 0:37:45 - Father Dave We moved it to Sunday. 0:37:49 - Deacon Bob Well, that's awesome. Well, and now, as we come to a close, oh my goodness why are we still talking? 0:37:55 - Father Dave We're both hangry. 0:37:59 - Deacon Bob I think now we've just fallen into like a calorie coma. So happy Ascension everybody, happy visitation. Didn't get a chance to talk about that, but God is good and we hope that you're having a good Many of you. Many families are graduating kids. We're praying for all of those moments. Lots of graduation parties going on and we pray that you would be filled with the hope that can only come from the Holy Spirit. Would you close us in prayer, father? 0:38:20 - Father Dave May Almighty God continue to bless us as we prepare to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, amen. 0:38:28 - Deacon Bob Amen. Thank you, Father Dave, Thank you everybody. You can send an email judgingfatherdave at hopeatfranciscanedu. That's hopeatfranciscanedu. God bless everyone. Let's go eat. Amen, I'm hungry, I know me too. They that Hope is a production of Franciscan University of Steubenville and is distributed in partnership with OSV Podcasts.
