2. Sorrowful: The Agony in the Garden

Christ enters the Garden of Gethsemane to pray and prepare for his Passion. In the garden, the battle between good and evil becomes abundantly clear, and Jesus offers himself freely for our salvation. He also invites us to join him in fighting against darkness.

3. Sorrowful: The Scourging at the Pillar

At Jesus’ trial, Pontius Pilate comes face-to-face with Truth himself. Although he finds Jesus innocent, he gives in to the crowd’s demand. Through Jesus’ immense pain at his scourging, we find a God who loves us deeply and intimately and is willing to suffer death for us.

Jesus’ crowning with thorns draws a line in the sand between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of the world. The people desired not to worship Jesus but to humiliate him. Yet, Jesus is a king who fights for his people.

5. Sorrowful: The Carrying of the Cross

Our Lord takes our sin and shame upon his shoulders and carries them up Calvary’s hill. Jesus invites us, too, to take up our crosses and unite them to his.

At the Crucifixion, Jesus breaks into the darkest moment in history to reveal the Father’s unfathomable love. What he did over 2,000 years ago, he desires to do in your life today—conquering sin and restoring you to communion with the Father.

After his death, Jesus’ side is pierced. The wounding of Jesus’ heart is one of the most theologically rich and mystical moments in salvation history. We open our hearts to receive the gift Christ offers us in these final moments: the gift of Mary, his mother.

8. Joyful: The Fullness of Joy

To fully appreciate the Joyful Mysteries, we must first enter into the longing of Israel for a Savior. Allow your heart to grow in anticipation for the coming of Jesus Christ, the Word became flesh.

9. Joyful: The Annunciation

Generations had waited eagerly for the Messiah. He finally comes into the world through Mary’s fiat, her yes. Our Lady longs to bring us her joy, too—the joy of Jesus Christ himself, incarnate within her womb.

10. Joyful: The Visitation

In the Visitation, Mary brings the sanctifying grace and joy of Jesus to Elizabeth and John the Baptist. Elizabeth exclaims, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb”—words that are part of every Hail Mary. Also, discover why Our Lady is the New Ark of the Covenant and, wherever she is present, blessings are poured out and battles are won.

11. Joyful: The Nativity of Our Lord

The Nativity of Our Lord is an act of profound humility. God makes himself vulnerable and comes to us as an infant. In response, Mary and Joseph, shepherds, wise men, and angels all adore the newborn King.

12. Joyful: The Presentation in the Temple

Jesus’ presentation in the temple provides a foreshadowing of the Cross. In the temple, Mary willingly makes a gift of the Son with the Father. Simeon also sees the Messiah and recognizes he is the One who will bring salvation for all.

13. Joyful: The Finding in the Temple

When Mary and Joseph find Jesus in Jerusalem, he is among the teachers, and all who listen to him are amazed. Jesus is the Eternal Word, and his words speak life. Then, Jesus travels from the temple to Nazareth, sanctifying life in the home and family.

14. Joyful: The Sweet Exchange

Praying the Rosary allows us to reflect on the life of Jesus Christ and puts us in communion with Jesus through the heart of the Blessed Mother. Pope St. John Paul II called for a revival of the Rosary in our families to combat the ills of our world. How will you make time for this daily prayer?

When Jesus is placed in the tomb, his mission seems like a failure. But three days later, he rises in glorious victory over death. St. Peter and St. Paul also provide us compelling evidence of life beyond the grave.

The Ascension marks a new era in the Church. Jesus ascends to the Father and reigns in the Kingdom of Heaven. He doesn’t leave us orphans but rather goes to prepare a place for us to be with him forever.

18. Glorious: The Descent of the Holy Spirit

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles, and the light of God’s divine love shines in the darkness. We are reminded Jesus is more powerful than all the forces of hell, and he gives us his power through the Holy Spirit.

19. Glorious: The Assumption of Mary

The assumption of Mary, body and soul, into heaven highlights the mighty power of God and reminds us of the importance of our bodies. Her assumption also points us back to her Immaculate Conception.

20. Glorious: The Coronation

The Queen Mother is foreshadowed in the Old Testament, and now Mary fulfills that role as Queen of Heaven and Earth. In fact, Our Lady of Fatima wears one of the most recognizable royal crowns. At Fatima, Mary spoke about physical wars but warned us even more about the spiritual war for souls, urging us to pray for peace and the conversion of sinners.

21. Glorious: The Triumph of the Immaculate Heart

God actively works in our lives today, and theologians have called our time “The Age of Mary.” Over the last 200 years, God has sent this Queen of Heaven down to earth with prophetic messages and words from heaven, including at the Miraculous Medal apparition. Even with the many evils and problems of our day, the Lord has conquered the world, and Mary’s Immaculate Heart triumphs!
